Busy Days

Wow, where has the time gone!?! Miss Riley and I have had quite the busy end of the week with not a lot of sleep! Riley has been having the worst few nights, she used to go about 4 to 4 1/2 hours between feedings and lately two hours has been a stretch and when she's not eating she's wailing, we've had a few 4 hour sleep nights. We think she might be lactose intolerant because it seems gas is what is making her uncomfortable and it's worse at night when we generally give her formula. We took her off of formula to see if it helps her tummy but unfortunately I am not producing enough milk (even taking fenugreek) to make it sustainable. We took her off of formula last night and she slept from about 10PM to 2:30AM, had 2 1/2 ounces of milk and then slept until 9AM when we woke her up for her bath. The sleep I got between 3AM and 8:30AM (I woke up a half hour before her to pump) was more sleep than I get most nights all together! Her belly seems much better so looks like we have to call the Doctor tomorrow and inquire about getting tested for lactose intolerance.

We've been taking walks with our neighbor, who is also on maternity leave, which has been fun, especially for Shari and I! Her son is 4 months so the four of us have been venturing out since the weather has been nice. Unfortunately it looks like rain all this week so we might have to walk the mall. Our week got super busy on Thursday, ironically Wednesday night was the start of our sleepless nights.

Thursday morning we went to meet my roommate from freshman year of college for breakfast at Mimi's Cafe. Andrea was in town from Chicago visiting some friends and wanted to meet up. It was great to see her and catch up, I realized it's been 12 years since my freshman year of college, how did I get so old? I hadn't seen her since graduation but we have been catching up on Facebook so it was great to see her in person. Then Riley and I went home and met up with our neighbor and walked down to Peet's with her and her son. It was great to get out and stretch the legs and get fresh air and also talk to an adult! After our walk we came home, got fed and then headed to the bowling alley for a team builder with my work. Someone backed out of bowling at the beginning of the week so they asked me if I wanted to come and fill the spot (they also invited Marc, I really think the guys were secretly wishing Marc would go instead of me, but it's all good!). It was a fun time and like a true Zimmerman, Riley took right to the bowling alley. Lori held her for the first half hour and gave her her bottle and then Ashley took over when Lori had to leave. I delivered scores of 115, 118, 100, and 124 (yes, 4 games, my arm and butt were killing me!) and one a bottle of wine, to which I yelled "Yes, I can drink it now too!" After bowling Riley and I hung out in the bar with some of the guys and so Diana could hold her since she didn't get to hold her while we were bowling. All I could think of was that line from "Sweet Home Alabama" when Reese Witherspoon's character is home in Alabama and she's in the bar and she runs into an old friend from high school who's in the bar with her baby and she says, "You have a baby...in a bar!" It felt a little wrong to have Riley in the bar but oh well, she has been wine tasting twice. Thursday night was another sleepless night.

Friday morning when Marc left for work in the morning I was in tears, I was so exhausted and at wits end as to why I couldn't make Riley happy, Marc offered to stay home but I knew he couldn't since his company is going to go through another round of layoffs. Friday we got up and went for another walk with our neighbor. Then we met Ashley for lunch at Panera, who was sweet enough to offer to baby sit Riley if I was ever exhausted and needed a nap. We came home for a bit to get an email from Marc telling us he arranged for a massage for me on Saturday since I had been having a rough time and many sleepless nights. After feeding and pumping we headed up to Walnut Creek for a bit of a shenanigan, we returned a pair of pants to Banana Republic for Marc who'd worn them to work once and decided he didn't like them. I was really too tired to argue about the ethics of what he wanted me to do so we returned them anyway. I also picked up his wedding band which was at Movado for a week getting polished. Then to Dr. H for our weekly cast change. Now I will say I was a bit nervous about Riley's appointment this week. Some women from the clubfoot group had seen pictures of her feet from last week and mentioned they were concerned about the crease on the bottom of her foot which can be a sign of atypical (or complex) clubfoot. I had read about this sign a while back and asked Dr. H about it several weeks ago and he said at that time he didn't believe her feet with atypical, stubborn and tight yes, but not atypical, so I forgot about it, especially since each week the crease got smaller and smaller but when a few women mentioned it to me I got concerned again so I decided I had to ask Dr. H about it. Now even with my concern I still 100% trusted Dr. H and his treatment of Riley. So Friday I asked him about it and told him the situation and he assured me while her feet were tighter than most she was responding quite well to treatment, so much now that he might move her tenotomy up a week because he thinks she is ready. He encouraged me to express concerns and again reiterated that he will continue to watch it and if we start to see something funny, curling toes, etc. we'll look into it to determine if she has atypical feet. He said the crease is a symptom of atypical feet but it's usually much deeper than the crease on Riley's feet and generally there are other symptoms that go with it and in Riley's case since she is responding so well right now he did not believe I needed to be concerned about it, he certainly isn't concerned by it. Whew! I was really worried he would be mad that I was questioning him but he welcomed my concerns and we proceeded to talk about Dr. Dobbs (whose bar he uses when Riley is done with her casts) and a new grant he got to research the cause of clubfoot. He also let me feel her Achilles tendon and feel how tight it was. Again, I love Dr. H and am so glad we decided to use him! I am so relieved he welcomed my concerns! Everyone at his office is great and they just love Riley there. Here's some photos of Riley's feet this week, it's so amazing to think that about a month ago they were turned in and up, truly amazing that this transformation has occurred without surgery or pain to Riley.

Oh and she weighed 6lbs 13.5oz, it's hard to believe she's just now about the same size as most newborns but is about 2lbs bigger than she was at birth and she'll be 7 weeks old tomorrow. You probably noticed in the photos her second toe is longer than her big toe, we learned it's called Morton's foot or toe, I have it too. Riley got her cute cheeks, eyes, nose, chin, and mouth from Marc, from me she got crooked pinkies and Morton's feet! Got to love genetics!

Homer has also been doing much better and seems to have taken to his new sister. Friday night after dinner Marc and I went upstairs to get Riley's bath ready and when we came down we found Homer looking over his unattended sister.

Friday was another semi-sleepless night but Marc took over most of Riley duty, I just got up to pump. He decided in the middle of the night to take her off of formula since she was so gassy and in such obvious pain and she seemed to do much better on the breastmilk. It hadn't started to rain in the morning yet so we went for a walk down to the bagel shop and then got dressed and headed to the mall so I could get my Juicy pants (which were purchased at Juicy, my own little shenanigan) shortened at Nordstrom, I also purchased a new pair of True Religion jeans, my post-pregnancy treat to myself. Then we had lunch at PF Changs, which was the first time we ate there since I became pregnant, it was a major food aversion during pregnancy, which was unfortunate. Then we headed up to Pleasant Hill for my hour massage (best husband ever!) and then to Jill and Edwin's for dinner to celebrate Edwin's birthday. My massage was amazing, I had to fight not to fall asleep during it, I wanted to enjoy every moment of it. Here are some photos from Edwin's birthday celebration.

Little Tootsies...

Here are pictures of Riley's feet after getting her 4th cast off (I got some good pictures since Marc was with me)! I just love these little tootsies...

In This Corner...

...weighing in at 6lbs 8.5oz, Riley Madison Zimmerman! She did it, my little baby girl finally surpassed the 6lb mark! We weighed her at Dr. Hoffinger today like we always do and she gained 9oz since last week! She still seems so tiny without her casts on.

Our appointment went well! Daddy came with us today and got to see the cute little tootsies and cuddle with Riley without her casts on. Dr H is still very happy with her progress and only 3 more casts until her tenotomy and we're looking at a tenotomy date somewhere around March 23! I can't wait, the end is in sight!

I need to download pictures of Riley's feet so I will post those later! Iwas just so excited about my little heavy weight. :)

Where to Start

Wow, so I have been quite the negligent blogger lately. Things have just been crazy! My parents are here so Nanna and Pops are on Riley duty so I have a chance to blog. After our visit with Daddy at work last week Riley had her 1 month doctor's appointment and passed with flying colors. She weighed in at 6lbs 10oz with casts on. I also experienced her first vaccine, I was in recovery at the hospital when she got her first Hepatitis B vaccine so Thursday's shot was my first experience. Poor thing took it like a champ, but her face very quickly went from content to not so happy to sound asleep after it was done. It was pretty cute, in a sad sort of way, to see her face scrunch up when she got the shot. So here is a brief day by day update of our activities over the past few days.

Thursday, February 12: That night Marc was giving Riley a bottle and she was so into it she decided she was big enough to hold it on her own, and she was using the big girl bottle because we were out of the Dr. Brown's we like. We thought it was cute (and advanced for 1 month)!

Friday, February 13: We had another appointment with Dr. Hoffinger. I think we are about half way through Riley's casting process. Dr. H thought Riley's feet finally looked like they were responding to treatment the way he wanted them to so I was happy he was happy. He's been happy all along but really saw her respond this week. Ironically, I saw the least change this week but if he's happy then I'm happy, after all he's the expert! I will say, while I am thrilled with Riley's progress, I am getting exhausted with the whole process. It's wonderful to see the weekly changes but the process is just so long and weekly appointments get tiresome! We have about another 2-3 months until she's in her brace, it all just seems so daunting. Friday night was the first time the casts seemed to bother Riley, she was up from 12-4 screaming so at 4AM after we finally ruled out hunger, dirty diaper, and wanting to cuddle, Marc went to Safeway (luckily they are open 24 hours) to get her some Children's Tylenol. I hate buying that stuff there because it was so overpriced but relieving her pain was well worth it! I need to ask Dr. H if he pushed her feet more this time since she seemed to be responding better. Oh and when I weighed her without her casts she was 5lbs 15.5oz...just 1/2 oz shy of 6lbs! Doh! Luckily this week Marc is off of work so he will be able to go with me to her appointment this week, hopefully that will help ease some of the stress. Here's some photos of her feet from Friday:

Saturday, February 14: Happy Valentine's Day! Riley's first holiday...we got her a Baby Einstein toy. Unfortunately I am delinquent and didn't have anything festive for her to wear, luckily my friend Amber from the Clubfoot Support Group sent Riley some V-day socks! Thanks Amber and Brody (her son)! Marc was a romantic and sported for the bouquet of flowers even though I know he hates paying triple the normal price for them. I on the other hand have yet to fill out his card so here goes...what's better than a public declaration of my love to my husband!

Marc, I love you so much, I couldn't have picked a better father for my daughter. I love you more and more everyday and I love the life and family we have created. I can't wait to watch Riley grow with you . I love you now and forever! Love, Allie

Even though we were exhausted from Riley being up the night before all night, we got dressed and headed into the city for some shopping. We both wanted new Uggs so went to the Ugg store in San Fran to pick out our new pairs. I got some black, low boots and Marc got some new slippers. We shopped around a bit too. We also met Jenny and Josh for lunch and hung out with them for a few hours. Here's a picture of Jenny holding/feeding Riley...she's getting ready for Baby Jake! We can't wait until he is here and the six of us can hang out. Only a few more months til he's due! That night we picked up sushi and watched a movie and ate dinner. I finally got to have my spicy tuna roll since Riley is here!

Here's Jenny feeding Riley...she's a natural!

Monday, February 16: This was an eventful day for us. Riley's had a bit of the sniffles lately and Monday morning Marc was giving her a bottle while I pumped and all of a sudden I heard a gasp and Marc started screaming Riley's name. Then Marc was in the bathroom with Riley on the floor and he was giving her CPR! We rushed her to the emergency room (she was breathing but was definitely out of it). Long, dramatic story short, Riley choked on her milk because her nose is stuffed and babies have trouble breathing and swallowing the Doctors explained. They monitored Riley for about an hour and she checked out at 100% so they released her. It was a very scary couple of hours. But Marc found a cheap place for us to eat...the hospital cafeteria has great food and both of our meals, 2 drinks and 2 grilled chicken sandwiches with fries was $10 total! What a date!

That night we went to Marc's friend's house for dinner so they could meet Riley. The Casey's cooked up quite a storm and their kids Nathan and Allie were quite smitten with Riley. Nathan loved having her lay on his lap while he did Sudoku. Little Allie (I'm big Allie) even gave Riley some of her old books that she's out grown. Here's a picture of Marc feeding Riley with Nathan and little Allie looking on:

Tuesday, February 17: Happy Birthday Pops! Yesterday was my dad's 70th birthday and they came up to spend it with Riley. We had our usual Chef Chu's for dinner and Sprinkles cupcakes for dessert.

Today: My friend Mollie, from high school, was in town from London so we went to Walnut Creek to meet her for lunch. It was great catching up with her and introducing her to Riley. We have known each other since elementary school. After catching up for a few hours we walked around Walnut Creek for a while. Here's a photo of Mollie and Riley together.

So that's the update, sorry for the dump, but I feel much better now that I've gotten my update on here and am all caught up with blogging! Until next time!

Field Trip

Marc rides the train to work he is kind of stuck there until 3:00 at the earliest. Since he wasn't feeling well, Riley and I drove down to Santa Clara to pick him up and bring him home. (One of the perks of me being off of work - see I should be a stay at home mom!). While we were there Marc wanted to take the opportunity to introduce Riley to his co-workers and get a picture of her with him in his office. (I say office loosely, it's really a cubicle). So I got Riley dressed all cute and we headed down to Marc's office. I hadn't been there for a while and I must say I love what he's done with his office, he's got tons of pictures of Riley and I up and a picture of Riley on his background on his computer. It's too bad Marc wasn't feeling well but it was fun to see him show her off.

Here is Riley in her cute outfit, Marc picked it out (he didn't know I was going to dress her in it, it just barely fits her). Hopefully you can see it says "I'll Always be Daddy's Little Girl":

Here's Marc and Riley in his office:

Riley also rolled over yesterday, I don't know if it was an accident or a fluke or what but I put her down to swaddle her after feeding her and she rolled right over to her belly. I think what happened was she was kicking and she swung her cast over and it kind of rolled her lower body over and then she just twisted her shoulder over so she was on her stomach. I was so excited, even if it was an accident! We also did some tummy time and played on her activity mat. She really likes looking at herself on the mirror while on her tummy! She does great with lifting her head up while on her tummy so I think in no time she will have control of her head and be able to hold it up longer!

My Baby's One Month Old

I can hardly believe it but Riley is 4 weeks old today! It's gone by so fast I can hardly believe she's been with us a month. We're starting to get the hang of things and get into a nice routine. I think I've got her cries down finally and can tell the difference between a dirty diaper and hunger. Marc stayed home sick today and made a comment that it was cute how I had my little routine with Riley - we wake up, feed Riley, pump, go for a walk if it is nice, feed again/pump, run some errands if we need to, feed/pump, and then relax, then feed/pump and wait for Marc to come home. Today I was in my zone even though Marc was home and he was cracking up at me. I'm feeling great and I hope to start going to the gym again this week, I was going to go today but the weather was nice so we went for a walk instead. I'm planning on going to the gym after Marc gets home from work and let him have some alone time with Riley while I get my break by going to the gym. I love being home with Riley and can hardly bear to think what it will be like to have to go back to work. Work seems a million miles away right now and I love seeing Riley change each and every day. Every day she seems so much bigger and older and seems like she conquers a new task - like yesterday she kept her pacifier in her mouth for over an hour. Happy 1 Month Birthday Baby Girl - it's been the best (and most tiring) four weeks of my life!

Progress

Well, my baby girl has her 3rd cast on! I can hardly believe it, the women on the clubfoot support group that I belong to told me it would fly by and I didn't believe it but they were right, I can hardly believe that we are nearly through the casting process. And even more astonishing is the transformation that takes place each week with her feet. It's amazing the changes that occur each week.

So Friday Riley and I braved the rain alone and headed up to Walnut Creek for an appointment with the lactation consultant at John Muir, I was entitled to a free one so I figured I would check it out even though we have access through her pediatrician. Anyway it was slightly disappointing, not that the nurse didn't know what she was doing. Riley was super sleepy because she was up all day the day before and most of the night so she was not interested in nursing and I also learned that I am not producing enough milk. The nurse also told me that she wasn't gaining enough weight so I need to nurse her for 30-40 minutes, supplement with a bottle (either pumped milk or formula) and then pump for 20 minutes, but I'll get back to that in a minute. The whole process is very exhausting, it's like an hour and a half process when I am alone. So I left there feeling defeated and frustrated and like a horrible mom who can't provide enough nourishment for her baby. I had some time to kill before we went to Dr. Hoffinger so since I was feeling down I went to this bakery near the Women's Health Center that we love and treated myself to a latte (with caffeine since Riley was exhausting the day before!) and a ginger scone. Then we braved the rain and headed back to the car and to Dr. Hoffinger.

I will add at this point Riley had woken up and was not happy, we like to refer to it as hangry - where you get so hungry you're angry. We usually bring her hungry to Dr. H so that we can give her a bottle and he can cast her in peace and quiet. However, I was counting on nursing her at the lactation appointment so she was even hangrier than usual. I got in the car and turned on Beyonce's "If I Were a Boy" and Riley was done with her meltdown before I even put the car in reverse! She stayed asleep until they started to remove her casts. I'm not sure if I should be concerned about the song choice or happy there is a song that instantaneously quiets her. She also does like "Single Ladies" so I might have to focus on that one for a while.

As usual Dr. Hoffinger's office was great. We got there a half hour early and the casting guy was free so he took Riley's casts off. They let me weigh her again without her casts on and she was up to 5lbs 11oz, an 8oz increase from last week when she was 5lbs 3oz. So that brings me back to her weight gain concern, I don't see it, that's half a pound increase in a week. How is that not sufficient? Do they want my daughter to be a heffer. Also, if she went to 40 weeks, Dr. Traynor projected her around 5lbs 14oz so since she was due on Thursday, she was right where she should be. Anyway, we go to her pediatrician on Thursday so we'll see what she has to say, I trust her the most so if she says Riley is doing ok, then I'll adjust our hour and a half process, I do want my milk production to increase so I might continue the process for a few weeks to get that up but I don't necessarily agree with shoving a bottle down Riley's throat if she seems content after nursing. Obviously if she seems hungry I will give her a bottle but the past 2 days she's been so content after nursing and doesn't even want the bottle. Anyway, back to her feet, Dr. H was running late so I got lots of time with Riley's feet, I must say I do miss them, they are so little and cute, I just love them. I got to kiss them plenty and she got to stretch a lot so I was very happy. She seems so little without her casts on too. Dr. Hoffinger came in and looked at her feet and said he was happy with her progress. It was also noted the progress we made on sucking on a pacifier, we'd been working on it all week to minimize the screaming the rest of the office has to hear each week. Her feet are still pretty tight but he assured me that it won't hamper her progress or prognosis, it will just make him work a little harder at correction. I left feeling pretty good about her progress and every time I leave there I feel 100% confident we chose the right doctor. Riley continues to amaze me, to me it's amazing how such a little person can face the manipulations and casting and it doesn't even seem to phase her. She gets a little cranky the day after her casting but she can lift her casts in the air above her head like they are nothing. After the castings are done she goes to sleep in her car seat and sleeps the whole way home, it's amazing how she faces everything. She's my brave, special girl!

I'm happy that I only have 5 more days on my own and then Marc is off the week of President's Day. His company is shutting down again due to the bad economy, while it stinks he won't get paid that week, I am looking forward to having him around during the week to help out. Pretty much all his company has going for them in my mind is their insurance, so far his insurance has proved fantastic, they paid 100% of our delivery and so far we've only had to pay $20 an appointment for her feet treatment. It will be nice to have him home, some days I think going back to work would be easier than caring for a 5lb baby! I love being with her but she can be exhausting some days so it will be nice to have another set of hands available. My parents will be here too, my dad's 70th birthday is February 17 and all he wants is to spend it with his granddaughter, suddenly I'm chopped liver! So hopefully this week will go fast, I hope it will, we have a few lunch dates with friends and then Riley goes for her 1 month checkup on Thursday and we see Dr. Hoffinger again on Friday. Hopefully, before I know it the week will be over and Riley and I will have her daddy with us for a whole week!

Another view of her feet, it was hard to get a good picture since I was solo and she was enjoying her freedom (by the way her onesie is a newborn onesie - I guess she's not getting as big as I thought she was):

Perk of Living in California

One of the perks of living in California is the semi-mild weather in the winter time. Normally in Northern California it's pretty chilly and rainy this time of year but when we get a heat wave, it's gorgeous. Lucky for Riley and I the past 2 weeks or so have been absolutely gorgeous, highs in the mid- to upper-60s. Yesterday the rain moved back in but for the past week and a half Riley have been enjoying daily walks. Most days we just walk down to the Safeway shopping center down the street for a coffee or to exchange a DVD but it's been so nice to get out of the house and get some exercise. I'm crossing my fingers for some better weather next week! Here's another photo of Riley bundled up and in her stroller, ready for her walk!

Yesterday, Lyndsay and Xavier came over for a few hours so that I could take a nap. Lyndsay brought some lunch so we caught up and played with Xavier for a bit and then she watched Riley while I took a quick nap. It was so nice and thoughtful of them! Xavier as usual is absolutely adorable and so fun. I think Riley is going to have a big ole crush on him! This is a picture of him checking out Riley...he's going to have to get used to a newborn because he's going to be a big brother in August and we are so excited for them! We can't wait to meet the new baby!

Due Date

I can hardly believe that today is Riley's due date especially since she will be a month old on Monday. I can't really remember life prior to Riley, I don't know if that is a function of lack of sleep or the fact that she truly belongs in our family. In fact she makes us a family, without her we'd just be a couple. The past few days have been trying (I went to bed at 8:30 last night) but it's so fun to watch her change, she so close to being able to hold her head up and this morning I noticed her little head looked bigger.

Melt My Heart

Best Friends

Mr. Sea Horsey and Riley are best friends right now (and Mr. Sea Horsey is Mommy's best friend some days). Riley loves her Mr. Sea Horsey (thanks for the recommendation Woody!). Every morning after she's fed and when I go to pump I put Riley in her crib with Mr. Sea Horsey and she just stares at him. In fact she stares at him for hours so I am able to get a bunch of stuff done around the house. I feel bad moving her out of her crib some days because she is just so content just staring at Mr. Sea Horsey. Yesterday morning I caught Riley staring at Mr. Sea Horsey and was even "talking" to him a little, it was so cute. When he stops lighting up and singing she grunts a little and I go and turn him back on and she's happy as a clam. Some days when nothing will soothe her and she is inconsolable, Mr. Sea Horsey (we're going to have to come up with more creative names for her toys) is the key. Mr. Sea Horsey calms her right down! Mr. Sea Horsey is Mommy's best friend too.
Other than being in love with Mr. Sea Horsey, Riley and I are doing pretty well. This is our first week home alone with no other hands in the house. It's been a bit challenging on the Homer end, he seems to only have to go to the bathroom when I am nursing Riley but he's actually been quite good, other than having an upset stomach the past few days. Nights have still been a little rough, she sleeps well from 10PM - 2AM but after her 2AM feeding she's a bit restless - go figure Fresh Prince of Bel Aire is on! We've gone for walks the past two days and yesterday ran a bunch of errands. Today I feel like I am getting a bit of a cold so we are just hanging out around the house.
