Like His Father

I have a feeling that this kid is going to be pokey like his father, which will no doubt drive me absolutely bonkers!  I just had an appointment and I'm still only 2cm and while he's dropped some more, I have a feeling he's not going anywhere soon, damn progesterone worked too well!  My Dr did schedule me for an induction on the 29th!  So if nothing else, we know he will be here in 2011!  Now, I just hope he a) comes soon and b) doesn't come on Christmas.  The poor kid will be stuck eating Chinese food and going to movies with his parents his entire life!  Other than that things are good, I'm starting to actually lose weight so my Dr wasn't happy with that but I feel like I have morning sickness again, I guess that's a good excuse to go get a cheeseburger for lunch! :)

This My Friends...

is a full-term, 37 week, baby bump!  We did it, we made it full term this time around, huge relief.  Now if he just hangs out for a few more days until Marc is on shutdown (and isn't over an hour away in Santa Clara when my water breaks) for 2 weeks I will be one happy Momma!  I'm now officially working at home as I was almost 2 cm dilated as of Friday.  We go for our last ultrasound at 10AM today to get one last look at his weight so stay tuned!

Update: Jacob currently weighs 5lbs 14oz so he's a full pound bigger than Riley was.  So we are very pleased, he's a little small for his gestational age (21st percentile) but the Dr was not concerned at all.  She said we just have small babies and all looked good around him, the amniotic fluid was right where it should be and he's head down, facing back (so no pictures of his cute mug) so he's ready to go.  She didn't seem to think I would make it to 40 weeks since I was almost 2 cm last week but we'll see if I've progressed when I go back on Friday for my weekly check-up.

Karma?

What's my karma for having a 4lb 14oz baby the first time around?  A big boy that at 30 weeks already weighs in at 3lbs 13oz, just a pound less than Riley was when she was born at 36 weeks!  BIG FAT OY!  We had our 30 week ultrasound today and all looks good.  The ultrasound tech kept saying "Oh, you have a good sized baby in there."  He was seriously freaking me out.  We finally asked what that means, he said "Above average."  Above average indeed, this kid is 62nd percentile and is measuring over a week bigger than his gestational age!   We asked and "average" is 6.5-7.5 lbs, they're thinking like 8 lbs for him!  Can I order my epidural now?

But in all seriousness, it all looks good in there, I was getting worried because I wasn't feeling as much movement, just twists and twitches in the last week but my OB said that was probably because he was running out of room and sure enough, he's doing just great in there, amniotic fluids are good around him, he's growing quite nicely, and mommy only gained a pound this month.  And yes, he's still a boy, 100% confirmation on that front! :)  Oh and he's cute as a button, he had both hands in front of his face for most of the ultrasound but we got a few cute shots of the little, er, big guy!

When Average Is Good

Today we went for our monthly ultrasound to check the little guy's growth and everything is going perfect!  He is measuring average, at the 52nd percentile (average) which puts him in at 1lb 14oz and still has him measuring a day ahead of his due date.  Everything else looks great too, the fluid around him looks good, he's still super active, he's now head down and he did not like the ultrasound wand pushing against him.  We also saw him open and close his eyes which the tech doing the ultrasound said that you normally don't see at 25 weeks so that was pretty cool!

Here are some pictures of our little man, I think he's looking less like Riley and Marc in these than in the previous ultrasounds.  Yes!  My genetics may actually stand a chance!
His profile with his feet up at his mouth, quite impressive!

Face with hand up by his eye

He sure does like his hand up at his eye

24 Weeks And Growing

Last Tuesday I hit the 24 week mark.  Marc commented on how huge I looked that day, he meant it in the nicest possible way and I have to admit, my stomach is it a bit out of control this pregnancy.  I honestly think I am bigger at 24 weeks than I was at 36 weeks when I delivered Riley.   After he commented on how big my stomach was I remembered I was 24 weeks so I had him take some belly pictures.  We go at 25 weeks for another look at the little guy so I'm curious to see how he's measuring up!

Where Does Time Go?

Seriously, how is it September already?  And better how is it that Baby Boy's due date is less than 4 months away!?!  I feel like I have so much to do.  Even though it feels like the pregnancy has hit a lull the past few weeks, I know that before I know it, it will be Thanksgiving and then the holidays and somewhere between there and the New Year, I have a feeling the Little Guy will make his debut.  (Marc thinks we'll be in the delivery room on New Year's Eve, I say, hey, at least I will be up!)  Things are going well with the pregnancy, I'm 23 weeks tomorrow and just had a check-up Friday.  Everything looked great, no ultrasound (we go again on September 20th), just measurements and weigh-in and the usual.  I gained 7lbs this month!  Holy cow!  That's an entire baby!  My Dr was shocked since I didn't gain much with Riley the whole pregnancy but didn't tell me to be cautious of my food intake as I told her I was hell bent on NOT having another sub-5lb baby!  Since I go weekly for my shots, I've gotten to know her office quite well!  I did decide to try to exercise a little more so I've been hitting the treadmill and walking at a medium pace the last few days.  Let's face it, it's good for both baby and I so I should keep it up until I physically can't.  It also seems to help my varicose veins which are out of control and killing me so it's a triple positive.  I've also decided to eat better, really, when you charge a $1.50 cookie because you have no cash, that's a sign you probably don't need the cookie!  But it sure was good!  I've also been enjoying the Nutter Butter Blizzard at Dairy Queen.

Riley's doing great, she's been in underwear during the day for the past 4 weeks and is doing pretty well.  They say the accidents are normal for her age but she gets lazy and it's frustrating.  Her favorite thing to tell us when we ask her to go is: "I tell you when I have to go ok?  I promise!"  Then 2 minutes later she's wet herself.  She also likes to say "I went already!"  Well yeah, Riley, I've gone 8 times before Noon too but I still need to go again!  She can seem to hold it an hour and a half to 2 hours so it's looking promising.  And today she told me for the first time that she had to go poopy and we made it to the potty in time!  Fingers crossed this is it!  She's had a ton of birthday parties this month so she's constantly talking about them, that girl certainly loves a party!  A lot of her friends are leaving her day care and moving to different pre-schools so I hope that she continues to do well.  I must say that I am pretty glad the class is smaller and seems less chaotic but I know that she misses her friends.  I'm really looking forward to her moving to pre-school A because I love the teachers over there and they love her, I think it will be good for her to not be with a passive aggressive teacher.  She keps telling us that she wants to go into pre-school and she has to be potty trained so I think that's her motivation right now for staying dry, whatever works!  One of her teachers is ok (and Riley likes her), but the other one is just so negative and passive aggressive and I am not a fan!!!  I can't wait to get her into the pre-school class!

Well here are some pictures from her friend Eli's birthday party!

Riley with her bestie Bella!  We love her parents too and just went out on a double date (a first in who knows how long) with them while Riley and Bella stayed with a babysitter.

This is the "I went already!" face and gesture.

And the Hits Keep Coming

Yesterday Marc and I went in for what we thought was our last ultrasound. Our Dr (the perinatal specialist) basically wanted to see what we chose to do to treat Riley's feet since he's the one who diagnosed us and he likes to find out what his patients choose to do so he can pass along the info to other parents who get the diagnosis. He also said he would measure her and let us know how big he thought she would be if she went to 40 weeks. Our appointment was at 8 and we left at 10:30 if that gives you any indication of how the day went.

Riley was of course head down in my cervix like we expected, we didn't really get to see her face because she is facing my back (which is a good thing for delivery) and we saw bits and pieces of body parts. She gave us the thumbs up as she has done since she started flexing her fingers. We didn't get to see her feet because she was all tucked up and her back was facing my front. We couldn't really see much of the whole her because she's gotten so much bigger she doesn't all fit on the screen. The good news is all of her organs are where they are supposed to be and blood is circulating through her body like it should be. There's still enough amniotic fluid so that wasn't a concern. Now the bad news...she's not big enough. She's basically about 4lbs right now which means 90% of babies at 36 weeks are bigger than her. (Marc thought she was barely 4lbs but I thought I saw the measurements predicting her to be about 4lbs 14oz currently which is almost 5lbs) Either way if she went the full 40 weeks (which she might but at this point since I am 3cm and 70% effaced she probably won't) she wouldn't even break 6lbs for a birth weight (she should be gaining a 1/4 of a pound a week) so the Dr. was worried she might not be tolerating being in utero anymore.

He moved us to another room for a non-stress test (which is enough to stress you out!!!). Basically they hooked me up to heart monitors, then they hooked up a fetal heart monitor for her, and then they put another monitor on me to track my contractions. Essentially they were looking to see varying heart rates and how she was tolerating my contractions. I was contracting quite often but since they are still so mild I didn't feel most of them. They measure contractions on a scale of 0-100 and my strongest was a 35, so nothing too uncomfortable. Riley did fine for the test, of course she was stubborn and kept moving so it was hard to keep the monitor in the right spot to get a consistent read on her heart beat so we were there forever. At the end of the exam the Dr told me right now she looks like a small, healthy baby. I now have to go Tuesdays and Fridays for the rest of the pregnancy for these non-stress tests. So we will know more next week as they monitor her more, I like to think of yesterday as a baseline for her monitoring. As long as she keeps tolerating varying levels of activity and assuming she grows they'll let her stay there until she's ready to come out on her own, if she can't tolerate it in there then they will deliver her early and hope that she does better outside in the nursery. The Dr. did say at 36 weeks were golden as far as development goes, they just want to figure out why she's so small. Tuesday we have another non-stress test (NST) and then Friday we have another NST along with an ultrasound to see if the amniotic fluids are still at a normal level. If she's still not born by Jan. 30 then we go for another ultrasound where they will measure her again to see how much she's grown.

So the hits keep coming! I was really hoping that this time around we would get a good report, since at 27 weeks she was right on schedule in terms of predicted weight. I've also always measured about where I should be when I go to the Dr. except for this week when I was measuring 34cm instead of 36cm but since Riley had dropped into my cervix my Dr. had attributed the smaller measuring to the fact that she was in birthing position. Part of me wants her to be born because I think we will only know what the deal is once she is here (plus I am so uncomfortable) but the other part of me wants her to stay put to ensure she grows and is healthy. All I can do is trust my Dr.s these days and hope for the best, but still I wonder, why us? Why do we get the baby with all the problems? I have done everything right this pregnancy (other than being a excercise slacker), I always take my prenatals, cut out bad foods and still we get stuck with the constantly worrying about one potential problem after another. And why her, she's just an innocent little life. Meanwhile crackheads give birth to perfectly healthy babies. Is this my punishment for wanting her so badly?

Well here are the two pictures we got of her:

Her chin, lips and nose:

I know her hand is in this one for sure, I just can't tell what everything else is, I think her head is in it too (you might need to click on this one to make it bigger, I labeled where her hand is):

Whew!

Our final amnio results came back yesterday morning and everything came back normal. A big WHEW! We are very excited that now we get to focus on the fun stuff like buying the baby's furniture, decorating her nursery, and my baby showers knowing that she's a perfectly normal baby whose feet will be good as new in no time.

The last 10 days have been super rough on Marc and I, it's been hard for us to go out and see babies with "normal" feet or to see cute little outfits and not know if they will fit over her casts or braces but these are all minor things and now knowing our baby girl will be healthy makes it all seem trivial. We still wonder why this has happened to us and I often let my mind wander to what I have done wrong for this to happen to our baby but other than chromosomal abnormalities Doctors really don't know what causes clubfeet so I'm just driving myself crazy. But at least we are fortunate that it's treatable. But still the last 10 days have taken a toll on us, I haven't been sleeping well and am home sick with a cold which my poor girl probably has. So we're laying on the couch watching soaps and cuddling with Homer! I can't wait until she's here and I actually get to cuddle with her on the couch.

Our friends and family have been so supportive and we are so grateful for all the kind words and worrying everyone has done for us. Our baby girl is so lucky to have you all in her life.

Doctor Day

Today was Doctor day, we started the day out by going to a Children's Hospital satellite office to see the pediatric cardiologist. I must say I think we both felt a little ridiculous with the minature table, chairs and picture books with very limited magzines with sentences longer than 5 words. Most of the people there were parents with kids with broken arms and legs. But we saw the cardiologist who did an ultrasound and examined the baby's heart. Fortunately he didn't see anything alarming and said it looked very normal and didn't detect and murmur and any red flags. Finally some good news at an ultrasound! Our daughter waved to us as well and she was very active throughout the ultrasound but also cooperated so that the Doctor got some good views of her heart.

Then we had an hour break, feeding time of course, before my monthly OB appointment. That went well, we went over everything that's been going on, listened to her ticker, which we knew was good since we had just seen it and of course the weigh in, which I gained another 3 pounds, not too bad. We talked about everything that was going on but unfortunately the rest of my amnio results haven't come back yet, probably Tuesday at the earliest. I did ask her if I can still deliver normally or if I have to have C-Section now and she said I can most likely have a normal delivery, thank goodness, I want to try to avoid a C-Section. As for my concerns about being so small compared to other women at my point in their pregnancies she said I was normal so I feel a little better. Now all I need is the rest of my amnio results and I think I will feel much better! I've been on pins and needles since last Friday. Oh and because my vericose veins are so gross (they don't hurt) I get to wear support stockings. AWESOME!

Rollercoaster

Emotional rollercoaster that is!

We had a rough weekend. Friday we went to the perinatal clinic for our routine 20 week ultrasound where they do an anatomy scan of the baby. All was going well, the baby was cooperating, moving around a lot, they looked at her genitals and she was indeed a girl, and she grew a ton. Then the ultrasound technician went to get the Doctor and he came in and started focusing on her heart and brain and didn't say much to us. We started to get a little worried but then he said he sometimes gets in his zone and forgets to talk to his patients and it gets them worried. He asked me who my OB was and what I did, made chit chat with us. Then he dropped the bomb that no new parent, or any parent ever wants to hear...."Your baby has some birth defects that have me concerned." We were in shock, 7 weeks ago they told us we had a perfectly normal, healthy baby and Friday our baby girl had birth defects. He then showed us what he was seeing. Our daughter has 2 clubfeet and another condition called clinodactyl, which basically means her pinkies curve in instead of being straight. The fingers aren't considered a birth defect but since she has curved fingers and club feet he was concerned. If he had seen one but not the other he wouldn't have been worried but since he saw both conditions he wanted to do an amniocentisis to test for Down's Syndrome. Marc and I were in a state of shock, two weeks ago I was my OBs star patient and now we were talking birth defects.

So we did the amnio, I hide in Marc's arm and cried the whole time, mostly because it hurt. The Doctor said he's done 4,000-6,000 and this one was text book and she didn't even know he was there. Marc later said he watched it on the screen and he went in between her legs and took the fluid while he legs were wiggling around it. They showed us the fluid, which looks a lot like pee, and they told us it was clear which is what they like to see. Then we met with the Genetic Counselor who was super nice and explained everything they were looking for, the office there is so compasionate and the Doctor came in several times to see how we were doing. I kept asking how this could be happening to us since I was only 29 and our first trimester screening gave us a 0.1% chance of having a baby with Down Syndrome. So we went over what they saw on the ultrasound and basically the only thing that worried them were her feet and her pinkies, everything else was normal, her brain, her heart, and her limbs (which usually show signs of Down Syndrome). At 5:30 we finally left the clinic, my appointment was at 2:45 and I was sent home on basically bed rest for the weekend to reduce the risk of miscarriage that amnio's can cause. We went home in a state of shock. The weekend was absolutely draining for us as we tried to wrestle with the fact that we could possibly be the 1 baby in 900 (the odds they gave us in our first trimester screening). I hardly slept, Marc was a wreck, Homer was a sweet boy, I think he sensed our moods. We told our neighbors who were so supportive and both brought me a bouquet of flowers.

Then it was Monday and it was the waiting game. At 10:30 I got off of a conference call and walked Homer because I was going crazy sitting around waiting, I worked at home since I didn't want to get the news in the office. Marc had confiscated my cell phone because I was too afraid to hear the news myself. While I was walking Homer the call came, and the news was what we had hoped for. Based on the amnio she has a 99.96% chance of not having Down Syndrome, Trisomy 13 or Trisomy 18. And she's definitely a girl. We're still waiting to hear about Spina Bifida but they were less concerned about that because we have seen her move her legs in the ultrasounds and her spine looks fine in the ultrasounds. So next week we get the full results but they are confident that we have a healthy baby with club feet.

So what does that mean? Treatment on clubfeet is very successful. Before she's born we will meet with a pediatric orthopedic surgeon and talk to him about the ultrasound and talk about a treatment plan. She will most likely be in casts her first 6 weeks of life as they gradually work her feet back into position (fortunately clubfeet is caused by tight ligaments and tendons and not deformed bones), they will have to change her casts every week in the first 6 weeks. After that she will have her casts changed every 2 weeks until they are in the proper position. Then she will have to wear braces at night. When she starts standing and walking she won't have to wear the braces as much because her ligaments will be strong enough to stay in place. Within a few years no one will know she was born with clubfeet. Kristie Yamaguchi had club feet and several NFL players were born with it as well so her treatment looks good, especially since we hope to start it shortly after birth. My mom is happy because that means lots of dresses (which I normally wouldn't put her in) because of the casts. There is no treatment for the fingers, but it won't affect her motor skills. We also have an appointment on Friday at a pediatric cardiologist for a fetal echocardiogram since Marc had a heart murmur. They are just sending us as a precautionary measure since Marc was born with a heart murmur even though they didn't see anything wrong with her heart.

One thing Marc and both learned out of this whole ordeal is how incredibly much we love this little person! We also learned what a wonderful support system we have, we have the most supportive family and friends and we and our baby girl are so lucky.

So all iss well that ends well and our little girl is going to be just fine!

Here are Marc and Homer taking a nap, I saw them when I was coming downstairs from my nap and I couldn't resist, they looked so cute together.

Here are the two pictures they gave us of her, the top is her profile and the bottom is confirmation that she's a girl...it looks like a real tooshy now!

And at long last and after many requests, a picture of my baby bump at 21 1/2 weeks!

Baby Girl Update

Just a quick update on what's going on here. I had my 19 week appointment yesterday with my Doctor. I waited an hour to see her for five minutes, she even made a comment about it. But all went well so that is what is important, right? I got the "best patient of the day award" because I was her only low maintenance patient. I started the appointment off with a weigh-in, probably my least favorite part of pregnancy (other than the nausea, which is a long lost memory by now). So far I have remained in the normal weight gain range for my stage of pregnancy and I have gained five pounds total, three of which were this month, so she is really growing! Anyway, I've been getting some bloody noses and some jabbing pain in my abdomen that I talked to her about, both of which she said were completely common pregnancy issues and was not worried at all. The pains are my ligaments stretching to support my growing uterus, which as of last week was the size of a cantaloupe. Yikes! My Doctor also measured my stomach for the first time. Then we listened to Baby Girl's heartbeat which she said was perfect. It is crazy how much stronger it is getting, last month she had to move her instrument around a bit because she was still so small ( knowing how she is in ultrasounds was probably not facing forward) but this time she turned it on and there it was, nice a strong. My Doctor described it as perfect. According to the websites our baby is now about 6 inches long and weighs half a pound! So that was my five minute appointment in a nutshell, fortunately there was the cutest 21 month old little boy in the waiting room during my hour wait and he instantly became my friend, so that made the time fly. I'm glad I only had to see her for five minutes because that means all is well with the baby. I took the day off so I wasn't in a rush to get back to work.

In other exciting baby news, I started to feel the baby moving around this week. I have thought I have felt her a few other times but I was laying really still in bed and it was very quiet. This week I felt her move around while sitting at my desk working on schematics. It was pretty cool, I felt a little tap-tap-tap in my abdomen. And I've felt her a few times a day since then. It's the coolest feeling and makes it really feel like there is a baby in there. :) Anne and I were talking yesterday and we both agreed up until the point where the baby moves is the hardest because the only time you know the baby is in there before you can feel it moving around is when you go to the Doctor and either see it on the ultrasound or hear the heartbeat. I always freak out a bit before my appointments because there's no way to know that she's ok in there, but now that I can feel her moving (no matter how small the movement is), I know she is in there and moving around and that's all I need! We also set up our registries and added tons of pink! I am super excited and Marc was quite the sport with all of the pink, I offered to do a lot of green and yellow so it wasn't so "girly" but he was picking out pink himself left and right. We've also signed up for Baby 101 at the hospital (they teach you what to do with a newborn, how to swaddle, and most importantly change the diaper) and a Labor and Delivery class. We take Baby 101 the first weekend in November and then the Labor and Delivery class in early December. We also are going to take a tour of the new birthing center in the next few months and my Doctor told me to pre-register at the hospital for my delivery. It's all coming together and it's hard to believe that I am nearly halfway through the pregnancy. The first 13 weeks dragged along but now it seems to be going by quickly. I'm in my 20th week and on Thursday I will officially be halfway through the pregnancy.

Marc was in Boston this week for work so I held down the fort and got completely taken advantage of by my Homer. He had no desire to be in his crate at night and kept me up for 3 hours the second night Marc was gone and 5 hours Thursday night (he actually behaved the first night). He kept coughing (he knows how to use his cough to his advantage) and throwing a fit so at 5AM after being up since 3AM and having a 15 minute sob fest at 4:30, I gave in and let him out of his crate. He stopped coughing immediately and within 15 minutes he was sound asleep on the tile and an hour later he was curled up in bed next to me sound asleep until I woke him at 8AM. He had a checkup yesterday too (it was Doctor day) and fortunately he got himself in a tizzy so his vet could see what we go through. He was pretty concerned about the state of his heart and the fact that Homer gets worked up over small thigs or sends himself into coughing fits on purpose for attention so Homer goes to the cardiologist on Monday to have his heart evaluated and get a better treatment plan. I was also sent home with some "chill pills" since Homer sends himself into heart failure most of the time by getting anxious or worked up over stupid stuff, like what Marc and I are having for dinner. He was adorable this week though. I got some Bose noise cancelling headphones from a special offer from American Airlines and I tried them on Wednesday afternoon and Homer was super interested. I told him I was going to wear them when the baby was crying and asked him if wanted a pair and he started barking and yammering. The baby started to move around while he was barking so told him to keep talking to his baby, and asked him questions, and he kept going for a few minutes, it was soooo cute! Marc got back late last night and brought me back some Dunkin' Donuts from his trip so I got to enjoy those for breakfast this morning. I absolutely love Dunkin Donuts.

Wednesday we leave for Philly. We're spending Wednesday night in Philly, site seeing the next day. Thursday night we are staying with Jenn and Alex and then Friday morning we head to Delaware for Marc's friend Steve's wedding.

And on September 26 we go back to the perinatal clinic for my second trimester ultrasound. I'm excited to see the baby and see how big she is now, apperantly her arms and legs are now in proportion to her body, and have them confirm she is indeed a girl. I am convinced by the three girl shots of her but you just never know and I would hate to bring a little boy home from the hospital in pink and put him in a pink room. :)

Finally in the Cards

Well the cards finally aligned and the baby finally opened his/her legs, well enough to see the gender, and it's a...GIRL! We knew within a few minutes of being there and we got 3 pictures confirming her girlness. We're very excited to finally know that we are having a daughter and now are on pink, brown, and sage green mode. :) Her room's sage green, which we painted even before we decided to start trying and figured it would be good for a boy or a girl so now we get to accent with pink.

We ended up doing the 3D ultrasound to be sure we got the detail to confirm the gender and it was really cool. Of course she still looks so skinny because she's just starting to accumulate fat but I think she has Marc's full cheeks, so cute, and I am sure we are going to love mutchking (Yiddish for cuddling) them! We saw her swallow a few times and she stuck out her tongue, it was so cute. The lady doing the ultrasound said it was pretty common for babies to stick out their tongue when they swallow in the womb. She also opened her mouth which we were able to see. We also saw her sucking her fingers and thumbs and we got a few smiles from her. Of course she loves to have her legs crossed and feet tucked under her bottom. I realized the other night that I sit like that on the couch when I watch TV. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree!

At dinner Marc and I were talking and he asked if I was excited to have a little scrapbooking partner and I got really excited. I've been thinking of all the fun stuff I could buy to create her scrapbooks but I never thought that one day we can scrap together. I got so excited, it's going to be so much FUN!

So here are some pictures we got of our daughter (I'm leaving off the three photos that show she is a girl - I don't want to embarrass her too much)! It still amazes me that 8 weeks ago she looked like a jelly bean and now she looks like a real baby. We have an anatomy scan in 4 weeks so it will be fun to see how much she has changed in a month.

Things I've Already Learned

Marc and I decided to surprise my parents for their 40th Anniversary by taking them to a 3D ultrasound place so that they could see the baby and also so we could find out the sex of the baby. We thought it would be a nice present for them, plus we would benefit by finding out if we were having a son or daughter (yes, slightly selfish but it was a win for everyone - or so we thought). I did all my prep work, ate a healthy breakfast an hour and a half before my appointment and then drank a bunch of juice a half hour before my appointment to ensure the baby was active. Unfortunately the place was running about an hour behind so all of that did nothing for us. We decided to just do the 2D ultrasound because my Dr. wasn't too keen on us doing a 3D ultrasound and receiving medical advice from someone other than her or the Drs at the perinatal clinic. So we decided on going on the 2D route.

We got into our appointment and my parents' first view of their grandchild was his/her back. Yes, what a great first impression, the only nice part was we could see all of the bones that have developed over the past month. Apparently our child is camera shy, something we will change when it's born, he/she wanted nothing to do with showing us his/her stuff. No matter how hard I willed the baby to move around he/she insisted on keeping his/her legs crossed, knees bent and feet tucked underneath his/her bottom. Hey, at least if the baby is a girl, she's modest! I mean for crying out loud, I am going to change it's diaper 9-14 times a day when it's a newborn, the least the baby could do is let me know what I am going to be looking at. So again, our baby was stubborn. My parents got to see the spine, heart beating beautifully of course, we saw the baby swallow for the first time (I've read the baby has started swallowing amniotic fluid to practice digesting for when it is born so that was super cool), and we even saw the baby flex it's fingers like it was waving hi at us. The baby has grown so much since our 11 week ultrasound, it's really amazing. And what amazes me most is that we saw the baby stretch his/her legs out and I had no idea other than the fact that we saw it stretched out. I am sure soon enough he/she will start poking me all over. Unfortunately, we left still not knowing if this child of ours is our son or our daughter. The place agreed to let us come back Tuesday night for another go.

So things I have learned about parenthood so far:

1. Impending parenthood makes you overly fiscally responsible. I spent $100 last month on my credit card, the lowest my balance has been since I was in college! I guess it helps I can't really shop since most clothes either don't fit or won't fit soon. I could still buy shoes which I must admit has been tempting but then guilt sets in and I decide to save the money for stuff for the baby. I feel like one of those State Farm commercials, "I'm there."

2. When you are a parent, or are waiting to be a parent you have no control whats-so-ever over anything! This has been the hardest lesson for Marc and I to learn as we embark on this adventure. For two people who work so hard to shape their own destiny and pave their paths the way we envision it there are so many variables that we have no control over and it is very hard for us. No matter how hard we try we can't control what the baby will be (i.e. boy or girl), how our appointments will go, whether the baby will cooperate at appointments, and most importantly that the baby is developing ok and is healthy. For two ubber planners this has been a hard lesson for us to learn. The unpredictability of everything can be almost too much to bear for us at times. But we are learning. :)

3. No matter how much you will your child to do something, it's going to do what it wants to do. I semi-learned this lesson at the perinatal clinic when the baby wasn't cooperating there, I apologized repeatedly for our baby's actions, or lack there of, and they told me to never apologize for our baby's actions. Yesterday was yet another example of how no matter how much we will the baby to cooperate or want the baby to do something, the baby is going to do what it wants. Our mission is to guide the baby in later life so that he/she channels his/her strong-willed/stubbornness and uses it for success.

Stay tuned and cross your fingers that little baby Margulious cooperates for us on Tuesday!

Here are some pictures they sent us home with yesterday:

Month 4 Baby Update

Marc and I went back to the Dr today for my 4th month checkup. On a side note, I can hardly believe I am nearly 4 months (I just finished my 15th week and am in my 16th week already), this month seems to have gone by much faster than the previous months. The appointment was fairly uneventful, I guess a good thing. I got weighed (only gained 1 pound - I swore I gained like 6, I guess since my belly is growing my workout shorts seem to be fitting differently which had me really upset the other day and made me think I gained way more than the 4 lbs they say you should gain each month). My Dr. wasn't too concerned I had only gained a pound since it was my first month out of my first trimester and while I am feeling better I am still not felling 100% better and also because I started working out again. Anyway after all of that we went over my blood work results which all came back fine, I tested negative for TaySachs and Cystic Fibrosis so that is not a concern anymore and we also went over our First Trimester screening results which we already had gotten. After that she listened to the baby's heartbeat (we got to hear it again too) which was normal and healthy and we were on our way. No more ultrasounds. :( We go at week 20 for our anatomy scan but other than that no more views of baby until he or she is born. So sad! We definitely enjoy viewing Margulious!

In other news, Homer went to the vet today for a heart check-up. He's doing fine but they needed to check his kidneys to make sure he's on the right dosage of heart meds. While we were there I had them look at this growth he has on his tooshie, we noticed it when he licked it after his bath and he then sat on Marc's pillow to lick the pillow and bled all over it. Yes, he's disgusting. Turns out the poor dog has a tumor on his butt! I swear this poor dog can not catch a break. So when his normal vet comes back we are going to have it removed because it's pretty small and they can take it off without putting him under anesthesia (which they advised no anesthesia because of his heart). If its not one thing with him its another. But he seems to be doing great, his personality is great and he seems really happy. He's sleeping better at night too which is nice for all involved!
