Upsidaisy!

Yes, I know it seems I have been blogging alot lately (I really don't have too much time on my hands!), I think it's a combination of having things in order (I've been quite productive and domestic lately) and also everyday is a photo opportunity with Riley, she is getting to be so fun and is doing something new and fun everyday. People told us it would get better after 3 months and they were right!

"Upsidaisy" is a game I have been playing with Riley since she was in casts. I used to just do it at diaper changes to make it easier on me (we didn't lift her by her casts because we were afraid they would slip) but she seems to like it all the time, she lays on her play mat and I say it and she lifts her legs and giggles. This video is on her changing table in the Pack n Play and she's not necessarily giggling but I think the multitasking with her doll was a bit much to add giggling to. As you can see the brace doesn't seem to bother her one bit!!! She spends most of her day lifting it up above her head but she loves for us to say "Upsidaisy" while she does it.

Passed!

Riley had her first post-cast check-up yesterday and I am thrilled to say she passed!!! Dr. H wanted to check in with us a week or two after going into the brace and since my in-laws are coming to visit this weekend, we figured it was better to go sooner than later in case we were practicing bad habits. Well luckily he said her feet look great, better than expected for such a short time in the brace, and that whatever we are doing to keep it up because she looks great. She was a little bruised the first few days but it seems to have gone away. I told him I was still worried about her left foot and he checked her out and said her heel was still dropped nicely and it looks like her foot has the crease because the tendon on the bottom of her foot is very tight. He showed me some stretches to do with her to help work it out and told me that there was another patient with the same thing and he's now two with absolutely perfect feet. I was so happy, I always worry about going and imagine the worst! I am so glad we are using Dr. H, he never blows off my crazy mommy worries and is always very up front about her treatment and totally sets my mind at ease! He called her feet "cautiously great," I think mostly because we are so early in the game and even showed me he gave her a smiley face and the word great on her chart! Yay for Riley!!!

I'm starting to figure out how to put the shoes on too, I pretty much hate putting them on, I don't mind them once they are on, but putting them on stresses me out. Riley always cries and I get so stressed out about making sure her foot is in there perfectly so she doesn't slip and relapse. I'm getting better, I got them in yesterday at Dr. H without making her cry and today we only had a little crying, mostly because I gave her half of her bottle before her bath and was saving the rest for after she had her bath and got her shoes back on to help settle her so I think she was mostly upset at being hungry.

We go back in a month for another check-up, I scheduled it for my last day on maternity leave. :( I can't believe my time at home with Riley is nearly at an end. I love every minute I spend with her, she gets to be more and more fun every day! In the last week she has really taken an interest in playing, when I put her down on her play mat she hits all of her toys and pounds her legs in excitement and squeals in delight, it is so cute to watch! She even cries when she wants to play and I don't put her down on her mat. I might be biased but she's the cutest!!!

Today is Marc's 32nd birthday! He started his day with a nice nap with his little girl. After cuddling in bed with Riley for a while this morning we decided to run errands before heading to our neighbor's Baptism. Tonight it's baseball, wings, beer, and Baskin Robbins ice cream to celebrate Marc's big day!

...Bullseye!

Our flight from Miami to LA was full of celebrities. The Latin Music Awards were Thursday night in Miami so a lot of the attendees were flying back to LA this morning. On our flight was KC and the Sunshine Band and some other people I probably didn’t recognize, I only knew it was KC and the Sunshine Band because they were all wearing jackets that said it! Most exciting, we met Bullseye, the Target dog. Morris the Cat's handler was also on the flight, minus Morris, she does the make-up for Bullseye. I told her I used to work for Del Monte and had my picture taken with him at a sales meeting in San Diego and so we chatted a bit too. Bullseye's handler was super nice and let everyone take pictures with her so Riley got to meet her first celebrity today. Her handler has a 2 month old son so we compared notes on babies. It made the hour and a half delay go by so quickly and I couldn't get over how mellow and well behaved Bullseye is! Bullseye sat in first class, literally, she got her own seat and when we finally got to board she was curled up sleeping on the seat. I’ve never seen such a mellow, well behaved dog, she was a super sweet dog. And sadly the dog was way more behaved on the flight than my daughter!

Misery

Our flight home was the most miserable flight experience yet. Riley wailed pretty much the entire 6 hours it took to get home, she slept maybe a total of 45 minutes the entire day. (Fingers crossed this means she will sleep a full 12 hours tonight, she fell asleep pretty easily after her bottle so we will see). She was crying so much that one of the flight attendants was so worried and even offered to take her into the galley way and rock her so we could get a break. We think her legs swelled on the flight from Miami to LA, her legs were bright red and puffy so we loosened her shoes for a half hour. It didn’t help that our flight was over an hour and a half delayed so all of our feedings got messed up, it was timed perfectly if the flight was actually on time. Then we got on our flight from LA to San Jose and she was sound asleep through the boarding process, sitting down, etc, as soon as the plane began to move, wailing! Fortunately, people seem to have more tolerance for her because of her brace. Today was by far the worst baby experience yet, let’s just say we won’t be rushing onto any cross country flights with Riley in the near future. Of course she fell asleep in the car on the way home, though it did take longer than usual. The poor girl is so exhausted!

Last Day

Yesterday was a busy day for Riley, Marc, and I. First we got up and packed because we were moving to a hotel closer to the Miami airport, then we headed to my Poppa's for lunch. We had a yummy lunch at Char-Hut (Poppa's request) and then we left Poppa to go to see Marc's grandparents at a different cemetery and to do some errands. We brought Riley to meet Grandma and Grandpa Zimmerman, her middle name Madison is also after Grandma whose name was Marian.

After spending some time with Grandma and Grandpa we headed to a Carter's store, now you know your life has gotten pretty sad when you get really excited by an actual Carter's store, not just the department in Macy's but and actual whole store. My cousin gave us some outfits from there and I saw that it was in the same town we were in so I wanted to check it out. Oh my gosh, I went a little nuts! They were having a huge sale so I got Riley a few footless sleepers (they had like 5 girl styles!), a couple of sweat outfits, a couple of onesies and a cute summer bubble for next summer. Again, you know your life is sad when this gets you really excited, I need to find a Carter's store near our house.

After that little shenanigan we went for our Dunkin Donuts coffee (I absolutely love DD coffee!) of the day and then headed back to Poppa's to change for dinner and say good-bye to him. I think Marc knew I couldn't bear to say good-bye to him at lunch and so he suggested we stop by on the way to dinner to change. So we stopped by for about 45 minutes and said good-bye, he is so incredibly cute and loved just staring at Riley, I loved it! He'll be 96 in November so I hope he gets to see Riley walk and talk, I know he will just love it. After saying good-bye we headed to Marc's cousin's house where we had dinner with his Aunt, Uncle and two cousins and their families. His cousin Shari has two adorable boys, Cole and Jack and his cousin Brooke has an adorable daughter, Ava.

After dinner we headed to Miami where we were staying that night with my dad to avoid traffic in the morning. We used Yahoo maps which I will never use again and got so lost we nearly ended up in the Florida Keys! Good thing we asked the later at the toll plaza on the Turnpike and she set us straight. When we finally got to the hotel we had to give Riley a bath, she had been wearing the same socks for 2 days and her feet absolutely stink since they have been locked up in casts and a brace since she was about 11 days old. Last night her feet were less sensitive so I could really scrub them down, however, she is very much not ready for a big girl tub! She absolutely freaked out, I should have taken Brooke up on her offer to use their infant tub!

Today it was up early and to the Miami airport for our flight! Whew, what a fun but tiring week!

Beach Bum

Yesterday was another fun day for Riley. We had lunch with Marc's Poppy, he lives in Pompano Beach on the water so Riley got to go to the beach for the first time! First we had lunch in Poppy's condo and he got to play with Riley on the ground. Unfortunately, Riley suffered a massive meltdown so our trip to the beach got cut short. To calm her we brought her on the balcony and she got her first breeze, the look on her face was hilarious, she didn't know what to make of it all. After a failed attempt at a nap we decided to bring her to the beach where she cooperated for a few photos. Next year we hope to come back so that she can run around on the sand and play!

Then we had to partake in just one shenanigan, we saw a sign for a sandal outlet so we drove down A1A to find it, we found it and walked around a bit. After that we decided to head to the cemetery where my Nana is buried, I have wanted to go visit for years (I haven't been in like 10-15 years) but no one could ever tell me where it was. We finally found out where the cemetery was and got a very vague description of where she was buried. So after walking the rows and looking at headstones for 15-20 minutes we found her, right off the path of course! Riley's middle name is Madison after my grandmother so I wanted to take her to meet my Nana.

After spending some time there we came back to the hotel for a dinner extravaganze with my family. My cousins Jason, Travis, Travis' girlfriend Kat, my aunt, uncle, Poppa, and my parents all came to dinner to meet Riley. Riley had a rough day yesterday, driven by her lack of naps, so she had another meltdown. Poor Marc didn't eat until we got back to the hotel. The nice thing about this trip is we've had a lot of downtime so after dinner while Marc was eating I changed Riley into her PJs, I had to take her bar off to take her pants off and since she hadn't been out of her bar all day I let her play and kick around a bit (she gets an hour a day). I figured since it wasn't bath day she could play a bit and she loved it. She was kicking around, almost rolled over a few times and was just all smiles and talking to my parents. She was happy as could be. She started to meltdown after about a half hour so I clipped her bar back on, put her to bed and she was asleep within 5 minutes. She just amazes me at how well she adapts to everything. We were sort of worried that we would have a hard time putting the bar back on but she went right back to lifting both legs (bar included) high above her head (she loves doing this since I say "upsidaisy" whenever I catch her doing this). She has adapted to the bar soooo well! I on the other hand can get the bar unclipped from her left foot but not from the right foot for some reason! I also haven't put the shoes back on yet, Marc did it the one time we put them on so I'm a bit worried about that, but if Riley can live her happy little life in them, I think I can manage to get them on her!

Today is our last day here, we leave at 10AM tomorrow so after lunch with Poppa (he wants Char-Hut so we are taking him there) I think we are going to head to the cemetary where Marc's grandparents are buried, Madison is also after his grandmother Marian Zimmerman and then maybe some shopping (would you expect anything less from us!) before dinner with the Zimmerman side of the family - Aunt Tammy, Uncle David, cousins Shari and Brooke and their families. Brooke has a 15 month old daughter, Ava, that I know Riley is going to love to observe!

I'm starting to get nervous about our return flight even though she was fairly good on the way out here!

First Continued

Riley got another first, she got to meet her other Great Grandpa for dinner tonight! She had so much fun! She was so well behaved at dinner, another first. In fact, she has been so well behaved this trip that I think people are starting to think that Marc and I have made up the fact that she has a "witching hour." We met Marc's Poppy for dinner tonight at Outback and we got to meet his friend, Dorrie too. She brought Riley a bunch of fun toys that she can't wait to play with, they will all actually be great for the plane. She also brought me a charm with a little picture of a girl and it says Riley. So sweet! No one ever thinks of the Mommy! :) Riley was quite the charmer and loved being held by her Great Grandpa at dinner. Tomorrow she gets to see him again for lunch and if the weather is good, she gets to go to the beach for the first time! FUN! (Of course after the sunburn on Saturday we will be minimizing our sun exposure!)

First Things First...

First things first, today is me and Marc's 2nd year anniversary! I can hardly believe that two years ago we were getting married in San Diego and here we are today in Florida with our new daughter. It's definitely been an eventful two years, full of plenty of shenanigans but I wouldn't have it any other way! Happy Anniversary Baby, I love ya!

These past two days have been jam packed of firsts for Riley. Yesterday was her first plane ride. I must say I was pleasantly surprised, then again I had zero expectations. I really and truly expected to be those people that everyone on the plane hated but she wasn't too bad. We had about two meltdowns but they were small ones and she fell asleep for all of the take-offs and landings. One of the flight attendants told us she didn't even know we had a baby with us until she saw Marc walking up and down the aisle about mid-way through the flight with Riley in her Bjorn, I guess that was a good sign. And as an added bonus, Riley slept through the night last night! Happy Anniversary to us!

Today of course was our first year celebrating our anniversary with Riley. We also took Riley out of her shoes for the first time, good thing, she's been wearing the same socks since Friday and her feet stunk! Her feet were still pretty sensitive and wrinkley but it was fun to actually see them and play with them. We only had an hour, so we let her kick around for a bit, she didn't know what to do with herself and then she had her first "real" bath since she was like 10 days old. I went easy on her, I wasn't sure how sensitive her feet would be, which they turned out to be very sensitive, and I didn't want to freak her out too much, we've learned baby steps are best with her. But she had herself a real bath and actually got to move all of her legs around for about a half hour while we played with her and bathed her. I think she liked it and I can't wait for these three months to be up so that we can have more free time with her!

Then this afternoon she met my Poppa for the first time. She greeted her great-Grandpa with a huge Riley smile and he was smitten from first sight. He spent the remainder of the day just staring at Riley while Riley spent the rest of the day sleeping. We like napping Riley, it makes for a happy Riley!

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

Today we took Riley to her first Giants game! I will start out by saying, all things considered, we had a pretty good night last night! Riley slept from 7-1AM and the 1:30-8:30AM, not too shabby considering her whole world has pretty much been turned upside down. She woke up a few times crying, I think she tried to move her leg position and couldn't so she got frustrated but then fell back to sleep. I had myself a bit of a breakdown last night, sometimes I just get so sick of this clubfoot thing, and I really need to start taking lessons from Riley, she is such a brave girl and takes everything in strides and I really need to think about all she goes through and how she still has such a wonderful attitude and can still manage to smile at the end of the day.

So today we headed into San Francisco for her first Giants day, we've been looking forward to this day since before she was conceived so we were very excited but also a little nervous since it was really our first day in the brace. Let's just say it was challenging but a fun day none-the-less. We left early and walked down to the park, we put Riley in our Baby Bjorn, which actually worked out quite nicely, we weren't sure with the brace but it was great. When we got there the ushers told us to go get Riley a first ballgame certificate so we did that and then went to Build-A-Bear Workshop to make Riley a Lou Seal stuffed animal. Lou Seal is the mascot and I absolutely love him so we've been talking about making her one for some time now. Riley had a minor meltdown while making Lou Seal, nothing a bottle couldn't fix, and then we headed to our seats. Tim Lincecum pitched a good game but the Giants still managed to lose on Riley's first day at the ball park! Unfortunately we all got a bit sun burned so I really hope Riley's heals fast, I feel so bad for her but they say no sunscreen before 6 months so I listened. All and all the day was a good day, the brace wasn't so bad, and I got to dress Riley in some super cute jeans for the first time.

Bye Bye Casts

...hello brace. Riley got her casts off today and let's just say she is not a happy camper. I finally got her to fall asleep but it was after about an hour of rocking and a bottle. Granted she didn't have a good nap because her Dr appointment was during her nap time but she has been screaming since the casts came off. Of course while I was rocking her she managed to look up at me and give me her big, goofy, gummy grin. Gosh I love that girl! She goes through so much yet she can muster a smile for her mom who is a wreck! The Dr. said her feet look good. We ended up with the Ponseti brace with the Mitchell shoes, think Birkenstocks but in boots, instead of the Dobb's bar, but when she gets closer to crawling we will talk about switching over to the Dobb's (when she wakes up I will try to get some pictures of her brace). She weighed 8lb 15.5oz, so basically 9lb today which what I pretty much expected. The brace guy at Dr. H said she will cry out of frustration, not pain, but it breaks my heart none-the-less! On a high note, her feet are absolutely gorgeous, and as promised we can hardly see where they did the tenotomy. Diaper changes are a lot easier, we have a nice little handle, I know sounds terrible, but we have to look for the pluses where we can find them. I officially hate clubfeet! We kept her casts as a souvenir, plus Auntie Ralsto signed them. One day when Riley is older we can take them out and show her what a brave girl she is. We go back a week from Monday to make sure she is doing ok and is adapting to the brace ok, and then once a month for a while, Dr. H said he likes to watch them closely. I am 100% ok with that since I would rather go back once a month until she is 18 than have to go through all of this all over again.

For now, I just hope we can make it through the night, every time she moves we hear her cry on the monitor. They told us not to take her boots off for the weekend so she can get used to them easier, the theory is, if you give her a break, it will make transition that much harder so it looks like I have to wait a few more days to give Riley a real bath. It breaks my heart to hear her so upset, I keep telling her if I could take her clubfeet and make them mine so she wouldn't have to deal with this, I would. Poor girl has to be so tough at such a young age.

Daddy Time is FUN!

Marc is on a forced company shutdown this week...again! But that means he gets to spend lots of time with Riley. They are having so much fun together and it's so nice for me to have a bit of help. Today Riley and I went for our daily walk with my neighbor and her son and then I went out, alone, to run some errands and Riley and Daddy stayed home and watched the Giants play the Dodgers. The Giants lost but Riley had lots of fun with Daddy, Daddy even got Riley to take like a 2 hour nap in her crib like a big girl. Then the three of us took a walk down to Blockbuster to get a new movie for tonight.

Rest up little girl, we have a busy week ahead of us. Saturday is Riley's first Giants game, Sunday is a baby shower for Riley's future boyfriend, Jake, and Monday we leave for Florida so Riley can meet her great-grandpas!

Road Trip!

Marc and I woke up yesterday and didn't have anything to do so we packed up the SUV and took a road trip up to Sonoma for the day. We got our nosh disorder kit together, packed up all of Riley's gear and hit the road, my pedicure would have to wait for another day. So we got our Starbucks and headed up to Sonoma, we realized we have no idea how to get to Sonoma and go a different way each time so we went the super round about way and finally got there an hour and a half later. Our first stop was the Sonoma Cheese Factory, love that place, for some lunch! It's our ritual plus we love the free cheese samples! After a nice turkey burger and a few people thinking Riley's casts were baby leg warmers (must have been the wine speaking) we headed to Ravenswood, followed by Sebastiani. After Sebastiani, since it was just the three of us we decided we could make our own rules and abandoned wine tasting for the Napa Premium Outlets, so after a 2 hour stop there, and a super cute bathing suit for Riley for next summer, we headed home. It took us less than an hour to get home. We picked up some Chinese food on the way home, put the baby to bed, opened a nice bottle of wine and enjoyed our Chinese food. A perfect way to start Marc's 2 weeks off!

Project Runway

We're T -6 days until Riley gets her casts off, we couldn't be happier but we realized it would pose a sleeping problem. We have tons of sleep sacks but lots of nights we get Riley ready for bed prior to her last bottle and so we put her in her bouncy seat or swing before going to bed so we've been putting footie sleepers on her so we can strap her in. Well, we won't be able to do that when she's in her brace. It's incredibly hard to find footless, infant sleepers, I've scoured the Bay Area in search of these. babyGap has a few but it's a long way until Friends and Family and Carter's comes out with like one a season for girls (for some reason there seems to be more boy footless sleepers). I found a super cute Carter's one this week at Macy's for $8 but all they had were newborn and big sizes, I went with the big size since we're almost out of newborn clothes but that didn't help me for next week or in a few weeks when I think she will finally be out of newborn clothes. We have a few footie sleepers in Newborn and a few 3-6 months that we got as gifts, I've decided to take it upon myself to make footless sleepers for Riley. Now I am no domestic Goddess, I don't iron and certainly don't sew (not even buttons) so I'm sure you can only imagine the look on Marc's face when he came home one night from work and I had one of Riley's sleepers de-constructed and I was taking off the feet and then sewing cuffs on it. This is the finished product up here of my first one, it took me about 4 days to do it. I'm hoping as I perfect the process it will go quicker.

Daddy put Riley in her new footless sleeper tonight, here she is modeling it. It kind of came out as capris since I forgot I had already cut both legs and cut one again, so I had to cut the other and it came out more as a capri sleeper, perfect for summer, right? I mean I did it on purpose! Again, I am no domestic Goddess but they work! (PS - Notice Riley got her cast signed! Auntie Ralsto signed it for her last weekend!)

Sleeping Beauty

This week we transitioned Riley into her crib, we still have her in Snuggle Nest, it's just in the crib now, so I think that has helped her transition (plus she has a spiffy new mobile that projects animal images on the canopy). The transition seems to have gone off without a hitch because last night she slept through the night for the first time ever! Unfortunately, I kept waking up anticipating Riley waking up throughout the night, and even prepared a bottle for her at 3AM, but she went 13 hours and got her bottle at 9:30 this morning! I will say it was very nice to have an hour last night of just Marc and I since I put her down at 8:30. We actually got to watch 90210 in peace and quiet for the first time in who knows how long.

Riley managed to wiggle one of her arms out of her sleepsack, not sure how she did it but she did, so at hour 11 when I went in to check on her I found her one arm out of her sleeper and the other tucked nicely away all warm and cozy. The sacks are 0-9 months so they are still a bit big on her but they are nice and warm and cozy and since we're having some cool weather I wanted her to sleep in something warm, plus they are super cute. It was just too cute the way she was sleeping, the picture isn't great because I didn't want to wake her but she was just too cute to pass up the photo opportunity. Hopefully last night wasn't a fluke and hopefully her getting her brace next week won't mess up her sleep pattern but at least we got one really nice night of sleep! Keep your fingers crossed for us! Mommy and Daddy like consecutive sleep!

Lots to Update

I can hardly believe it's been a week since we said good-bye to our sweet boy Homer. The vet called after my last post to see how we were holding up and to tell me Homer went very peacefully. He also told me that after Homer's seizure he had declared him dead but the vet tech told him after Marc told them I had to come in and say good-bye, Homer started breathing again. He said if he wasn't there to see it he wouldn't believe it but that Homer came back to life so we could have our good-bye. I continue to miss him everyday.

On Thursday two of my college girlfriends, Jen (Woody) and Michelle (Ralsto) came into town from Indianapolis to meet Riley and spend the weekend with us. Woody brought her one year old daughter Annabel too. It was a fun (but I'm not going to lie, tiring) weekend. My order for beautiful weather was fullfilled, the weather was amazing, unfortunately the girls went back to snow in Chicago today but at least they got some good California sun and warmth while they were here. Friday we went to the Oakland Zoo and my friend Lyndsay and her son, Xavier, met up with us. The one year olds had a great time (Riley slept the whole time, except for the petting zoo, when she got to meet the male sheep, aka the goats). Here are some photos of our day at the zoo:

Saturday we took Woody and Ralsto to Livermore for some wine tasting. We checked out the Woody Family Winery which was awesome. It's just a mom and pop winery but they do an amazing job with their wines. Then we went over to Concannon for a picnic and then finished off the day at Thomas Coyne. The kids were good sports.

Saturday we did some shopping in Walnut Creek, this of course made Mommy happy but it seems my little girl is all smiles about shopping as well!

In other news, Riley has shown a lot of interest in sitting up and watching the world go by her, she is so inquisitive so I decided to try out her Bumbo last week and she loved it! Here are some photos of the first time I put her in it, she was so content just sitting there looking at herself!

Riley and I have been spending a lot of time on the floor playing. She loves when I sing her "Skidamirinky-Dinky-Dinky, Skidamirinky-do." Here's a quick video of us singing, sorry in advance for my tone defness, she doesn't seem to mind.
