5 Months

Well I am a week late but Jacob turned 5 months last Saturday, seriously where does the time go.  Jacob is super fun right now, he definitely recognizes us and when I pick him up at day care he rolls towards me if he's on the ground and lunges for me if someone is holding him.  When I drop him off he lunges toward his teacher and is eager to get in her arms (probably because he knows she'll give him his bottle!).  He seems to finally (knock on wood) be sleeping well and even slept through the night 5 nights in a row, the 6th night be busted out of his swaddle blanket and that woke him up and he had a hard time settling back down.  The next night however, through the night, woohoo!  It's all good timing because Marc was on a business trip this week which left me with 2 kids fending on our own.  Riley was awesome while he was away and listened, followed directions and was overall a great helper.  She took her job of mommy's helper very seriously!  Day care suggested we give her more responsibility at home because she has been doing better in day care with responsibility (she passes out plates for lunch and makes sure that everyone has their blankets for nap time) so we gave her some chores and she'll start getting a $1 weekly allowance if she does all of her chores.

But back to Jacob.  Jacob is just a mellow love of a little boy.  He is so sweet and cuddly and very low maintenance.  As long as he's fed, rested and has a toy in his hand, he is one happy little guy!  He's rolling, although he won't give me the satisfaction of seeing him in action but everyone else has and day care tells me he's a rolling fool.  He's close to sitting on his own and he's got the greatest belly laugh out there.  He laughs the most when he is tired and it's this deep belly laugh.  I wish there were more hours in the day to spend with both kids!

Raspberries

Look at what a certain little boy learned how to do over the weekend...

I think it's super cute!   He gets a funny look on his face and then he starts blowing raspberries, it's very wet and messy but certainly adorable.  His teachers at day care said that he has been making them all week.  He just sits or lays there with a toy in his hand blowing raspberries.  Boys will be boys!

Solids

Friday night I started Jacob on solids.  Our peditrician didn't want us to start until between 5 and 6 months but Jacob has been lunging at food and smacking his lips so I thought he was ready, day care also thought he was ready so I figured starting a day before he turns 5 months was close enough.  He also has not really been sleeping through the night and even though the Dr says there is no proof that solids help them sleep through the night, I figured it couldn't hurt, especially after I was practically falling asleep during a team meeting on Thursday!  I need to get some sleep.  (On a side note he did sleep through the night, like 7:45PM to 6:15AM Thursday night, when I woke up at 3AM to pump and realized that I had gotten 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep I felt like I could take on the world!)  So Friday night we tried the cereal.  The jury is still out on whether he likes it our not, he just took a few bites and then grabbed the spoon and gnawed on that for a while, most of the cereal drooled out of his mouth and onto his clothes but he did get a few good bites in!

Sweet New Ride

Kellogg's decided to eliminate their fleet cars and go to a reimbursement program, I got lucky enough to be picked in the first wave of car turn ins. It's actually one big cluster. Someone bought my Escape so I have to trade cars with her but someone had bought her car so she has that person's car so I'm getting some random person's car. Apparently it has like 60,000 miles and needs new brakes so good thing I decided to get my own personal car which I picked up on Friday. I am super excited because this is the first time in like 6 years that I have gotten to pick the car, color, options etc. So Friday I picked up my brand spanking new GMC Terrain! Marc and I now have matching his and her cars, he has the Acadia in silver and I got the Terrain (which is the smaller version of the Acadia) in grey. His and hers, ah how sweet! Anyway, I am super in love with my new car!

Worst Mother's Day Ever

So this Mother's Day was pretty much the worst Mother's Day ever.  Aside from the awesome charm necklace that Marc and the kids gave me with both kids' names on it and the fact that I have two beautiful healthy kids, the stars just wouldn't align for me.  It started at 9AM while we were all in bed opening my cards and I was taking pictures, Riley decided she didn't want to be in pictures anymore so I took some pictures of Marc and Jacob and Riley got jealous (which I can totally understand but she opted out of the pictures but I can definitely emphasize with her feelings) and chucked a hard plastic toy at Jacob so she automatically got sent to time out.  After that drama was over we did go on a nice walk for coffee.  Then we came home for a nap and were going to go for a nice lunch afterwards.  Riley monkeyed around for a while in her room, I finally went in and told her she had to go to sleep.  Well Riley has been consistently napping for an hour to an hour and a half for the last few months and on Mother's Day she decided to nap for 3 hours!  Normally I would welcome this with open arms but we kept waiting for her to wake up so we got nothing done,including eating, by the time she woke up it was after 4 so we just went and got BBQ stuff and BBQ outback.  Then I took my favorite pair of jeans out of the wash and they had a huge hole in them and they looked like they were disintegrating.  And the gravy, Jacob woke up 6 or 7 time (I literally lost count) that night.  Happy Mother's Day to me! I definitely need to stop having expectations with two young kids!

Good Morning from...

the Jacob-Burrito!

I still have to swaddle Jacob at night and for naps, he just can't settle down and get to sleep without being swaddled so I call him my Jacob-Burrito, I then tell him that I want extra guacamole (which I say funny) on my Jacob-Burrito and I nibble his cheeks.  He squeals and smiles with delight.

Tuesday night I had a work dinner, that was the first night that I didn't put my Jacob-Burrito to bed, of course I snuck in to see him when I got home (Riley was awake when I got home so I got to read her a story, I told her that's the perk of being a big sister) but in the morning I was extra eager to see Jacob, he always gives me big smiles in the morning so I was very hopeful that I would get even bigger smiles since I wasn't there to put him to bed.  Sure enough I got that goofy, gummy grin up above when he saw me.

Jacob got his anywhere chair a couple of weeks ago, we opted for the bigger chair this go round and gave it to Riley and got a new cover for the little anywhere chair and gave that to Jacob so he no longer needs to sit in the pink chair.

Let's Go Giants!

Last Sunday Marc and I took Jacob to his very first Giants game!  Marc wanted it to just be the 3 of us so that Jacob could get all of the attention and have his first time be with just us, just like Riley's was, so our friends Pat and Jen so graciously took Riley for the day for a massive play date with her bestie Bella.  Marc and I headed to the city with Mr Jacob-Pants without Riley knowing where we were going, I felt kind of bad but she would have flipped out and insisted on going so it was better that she didn't know.  She had gone the prior weekend with Marc and Marc's boss' boss and his daughter for a nice daddy/daughter day so it' not like she didn't get to go to a game.  Let's just say the drive in was odd, Jacob fell asleep and there was no constant chitter chatter since our little chatty Chatterton wasn't with us.  We didn't know what to do with the quiet, we could finally have that conversation that we've been longing to have with each other, except we didn't know what to talk about!  We finally settled on the topic of my new car (my company is getting rid of their fleet and I am in the first wave so I have to have a new car by May 29).  Anyway, we made it through an entire conversation without any "Mom, mommy, momma, I need to tell you something.  The the the the, the sky is blue."  Seriously, that's what happens.

We got to the city and had to wake Jacob up to put him in the Bjorn to make the trek from our usual parking spot down near Market St to AT&T Park.  We made a quick stop at Starbucks for a beverage and then started the walk down, the day was gorgeous and Jacob loved taking in the views of the bay and all of the people that were out, I swore his eyes were going to pop out of his head.  We got to the game and went to our seats, gave Jacob a bottle and after a short meltdown he fell asleep for a few innings in my arms.  Not going to lie, I absolutely loved it, I miss him sleeping on my chest and in my arms so I will take any cuddles I can.  He woke up around the 6th and we watched the game a bit and then we walked down to Build A Bear Workshop where we made him his "first game friend," a bear so creatively named "Teddy," who wears a Giant's jersey and hat.  We made Riley a Lou Seal at her first game so we carried on the tradition by creating "Teddy."  Jacob LOVES "Teddy!"  After "Teddy" joined the fam we just hung around the lower the level and watched the game.  Jacob was getting tired so we left even though the game was tied in the bottom of the 9th, plus we needed to rescue Jen and Pat from two toddlers. 

All in all it was a great day, Jacob exceeded my expectations at the game and Riley behaved at Bella's with only a few minor squabbles!  Got to love when 2 kids are fit for public!

Riley-isms to the Max

Riley is absolutely hilarious these days, I really need to keep a notebook with me at all times to capture what she says because I forget half of the funny things that she says.  Here's a few of my favorites so far. 

Last night she earned her 5th smiley face for good behavior and listening which meant she earned her latest prize, a set of beads to make necklaces with.  When we told her she got her 5th smiley face and that the prize was hers she said "Oh my gosh, I don't believe it!" 

Then later last night Marc said to her: "Riley, Sunday is Mother's Day, what should we do for Mommy?"
Riley: "We should probably get a card."
Then I asked her: "Riley, did you make me something for Mother's Day at school?"
Riley: "No, maybe next time though."

And by far my favorite Riley-ism:  My company is getting rid of their fleet cars and going to a monthly reimbursement and lucky me got picked for Wave 1 of the transfer of programs so I have to get a new car by May 29.  Currently, I let Riley have a snack in my car whenever she wants but when I get my new car I am changing the rules and there will be no snacks so I've been prepping her for the change for about a month now.  So we were driving home from day care last week and Riley said: "When I get bigger I'm going to get a big car and I'm not going to have rules because I like snacks.  But you need to sit next to me because I don't know how to drive yet." 

I know there are way more, I just need to start writing them down right away!  She seriously makes us laugh with her logic and the way she puts stuff in context!

Mommy/Daughter Time

Friday is a work at home day so I decided to pick Riley up a little early from day care and take her for some ice cream and some alone time with me.  I popped into Jacob's room and told his teacher I was going to grab Riley, take her for some ice cream to spend time with her alone and then come back for Jacob in like an hour so they didn't think I was forgetting him (I would never forget my little man!).  He was involved with his bottle so he was perfectly content!  She thought it was an awesome idea.  Riley was outside when I got to her class and when I went outside she came running to me, jumped into my arms and gave me a huge hug and was so excited to come with me for ice cream.  I told her yesterday once that I was going to come get her early and take her for ice cream so I'm not sure if she remembered or not. 

I decided to take her to Coldstone because I thought she would have fun picking a flavor and toppings.  And yep, as soon as we walked in and got in line she eyed the blue ice cream.  Well my original plan was to get cake batter ice cream with Oreo cookies to share but she was hell bent on getting blue ice cream (and she wanted me to get bright green ice cream, no chance!).  So I let her get her own and I got my own.   While we were in line I told her she could try mine and she said "You can try mine and I can try yours, that's a good idea momma."  I was holding Riley while we waited for our turn and she kept putting her arms around my neck and hugging me and saying "I love you momma," and "Mommy, I love you," over and over.  It was so sweet and so worth the effort of doing two pick ups and taking her in and out of the car a few times.  We sat outside and ate our ice cream and Riley ate every last bite of her blue ice cream (cotton candy with rainbow sprinkles).  She even tasted mine but told me she liked it but liked hers better, it was so cute.  It was my old Riley.  She did keep asking if Jacob was crying because we left without him.  Of course she asked if we could go back there again.  Um, of course! 

After our ice cream we went to get Jacob and she told the Assistant Director that we went for ice cream and she asked Riley why and Riley responded "So we could have alone time together."  So sweet!  I could see the pure happiness and joy in Riley's face and attitude from having that one on one time with me.  It was awesome to have my sweet Riley back, even if it was shortlived and only for a few hours!  I'm definitely going to have to make an effort to take her on more excursions like that while Jacob is still young and doesn't know I'm sneaking her out! :)  Jacob cashed out in the car on the way home from day care so I let Riley ride her bike outside for like a 1/2 hour while he slept in the car, all in all a great afternoon for the RiRi!  It was so nice to see her happy and beaming and have her sweetness back again!

Jacob has been going from belly to back for almost a month now but he has yet to master the back to belly roll.  He is SOOOOOO close though!  I caught this video on our sick day home together.  Makes me miss the little guy!  Excuse his belly hanging out! :)





First Sick Day

And on the 7th day of day care, Jacob had a sick day.  Yep, I think we hit some sort of record, 6 days in day care before getting sick.  Last night Jacob was not happy, screaming, fussy, rubbing his eyes.  He even screamed through his bath which usually calms him and then when I gave him his before bed bottle (which he can't live without) he projectile vomited all over me and his room.  It was actually quite impressive, he managed to projectile vomit while still eating causing a water fountain effect, he's got mad skills.  So needless to say he did not sleep through the night since he lost most of the contents of that bottle and woke up at 4:15 to feed.  When Marc brought him in his eyes were completely crusted, great, pink eye.  So I kept him home and the stars aligned and I was able to get him an appointment with his Dr (who actually had appointments open, lately it's been so hard to get an appointment with her unless I make the appointment weeks in advance, maybe I should just schedule a bunch of random ones for the first few months of day care!) for 50 minutes after my appointment (have I mentioned that I've been sick for 2 weeks!!!).  So we saw my Dr and I have an ear infection and sinus infection and she thought it looked like Jacob had pink eye, then we headed downstairs for Jacob's appointment and we saw his Dr who wasn't convinced that he had pink eye but gave us drops just in case it gets worse, she did classify it in the computer as acute conjunctivitis but told us to just watch him and if it gets worse to use the drops but at his age it's common for the sinuses to drain through the tear ducts.  So basically the two of us are a hot mess but we got another day together and we loved it! :)  I love Riley to death, I think you all know that, but there is something super special about the mother/son relationship.  I definitely hoped for a sister for Riley before we found out I was pregnant with a boy but now that I am experiencing the mother/son relationship, I thank my lucky stars for my sweet boy and while I don't like either of us to be sick, I am grateful for the time with him, especially since he's growing so fast.  Jacob jumped ANOTHER percentile on weight, he is now at 14lbs 11.5oz and went from the 23rd percentile to the 26th in just under 2 weeks.  Love my chunky monkey!
