A Good Case of the Sickies

Jacoby got a good case of the sickies last weekend and was home last Monday and Tuesday.  He had a low grade fever and a terrible cough which of course always comes with wheezing as a package deal so we are back to the nebulizer.  As long as we have Despicable Me on, he seems to tolerate it.  He came home this Monday SUPER cranky, on the way to school he told me he was sick but I thought he just wanted to stay home.  Well as I was giving him his breathing treatment, he felt really hot and all he wanted to do was go to sleep so I took his temp...102.8.  Ugh...a good case of the sickies.  Guess who gets to stay at home with him again...moi!

If you have to sit and do the nebulizer, you might as well check out this year's Halloween costumes!

Sick Day

I got called to pick up Jacob last week because he had another cough/cold and was wheezing.  It was a super stressful week but as usual, I enjoyed the one on one time with my little guy!

Back At It

As I mentioned, Jacob was sick this week with a fever, cough and cold which meant we were back at the breathing treatments.  He had a really rough time with this virus, especially Thursday night when he was up every 30-40 minutes, I was literally counting the minutes until I could give him more Motrin.  I even had to give him a 1AM breathing treatment, of course Marc was away for work that night so it was all me.  Jacob was only comfortable when he was in my lap, it was a rough night.  He's been a total sport about the nebulizer though.  And I do adore the cuddles he gives while his treatments are going on.

Miles joined us for this one, Jacob loves Miles

Just A Day In the Life Of

Monday was my first day working a full day and then getting Riley to Dr H, I've been lucky the past few weeks that I've been on vacation days.  I was lucky in that I was able to leave work at Noon and work from home from 12-3until I to go and  grab Riley and Jacob to head back up to Walnut Creek for her appointment.  When I picked them up Jacob's teachers told me that he was super cranky, had a 99.5 fever, and he was breathing heavily, no wheezing though.  Great!  I was just praying that he made it through Riley's appointment without a full blown meltdown.  They had just given him his inhaler so I didn't grab it.  We headed up to Walnut Creek and he was not looking good, glazed eyes, super sleepy and very agitated plus more heavy breathing.  The minute we walked into Dr H's office he started wheezing.  Now they were painting in the hallway of the building so I'm wondering if that set him off but it was ugly.  I was debating about taking him to Urgent Care up there or if I should just try to get home and give him his nebulizer at home and go from there.

Meanwhile, Riley was getting her cast off, Dr H rushed us through since he took a look at Jacob.  Of course Beverly was NOT there, so I was seriously sweating with Jacob in full meltdown mode and not knowing how Riley would react to it all.  Riley of course was a champ!  She giggled through the sawing off of her cast because it tickled and then sat ALL BY HERSELF on the table to get casted since I had to tend to Jacob who was screaming hysterically.  She proceeded to give Dr H a full explanation of her graduation (thus the pink cast) and where all of the kids would be moving too.  I even let them give Jacob a lollipop to try to calm him down, which worked until I tried to pry the sticky, empty stick from his kung-fu grip.  That did not go over well!  Riley sat contently while Dr H put on her final cast!  Woohoo!  Pink with green sprinkles.  He said it looks good but is keeping the cast on for 12 days this week since she'll tolerate it and that will let him get some extra stretch.  Her little sore also got bigger from having sweaty feet so he bandaged that up, I'm most worried about that sore than her being in the cast.  She is a total champ!  She did complain of itchy skin when the cast came off so I'm anticipating that being a struggle next week, that and how I am going to get the stink out of her foot, I think it might be there permanently it smells so bad!  (She's very proud of it though!)

Have you ever seen a girl so happy about a cast???

Riley's 4 casts

Dr H convinced me to get Jacob home and try treating him there.  It was a very tense drive home in which I kept looking back to check on his breathing.  I got him home raced him upstairs for an albuterol treatment, it helped some but he was still breathing hard, we could see the pulling at his neck and ribs.  Marc got home and told me to take him to Urgent Care.  What a waste, I really need to stop going to Valley Care Urgent Care, because he was screaming they refused to believe that he was wheezing and having difficulty breathing.  So they basically checked his throat and ears (which I knew were fine since he has tubes) and sent me home.  I was pretty annoyed, if you hear an 18 month old screaming and I bring him in for an asthma attack, why would you make him wait an hour to be seen?  (They were full of adults who had allergies and sinus infections, clearly emergencies).  Thank goodness for smart phones because I made him an appointment while waiting with his normal Dr. for the next day.

Watching the cars and trucks at Urgent Care while waiting to be seen

He's had enough!  I would have done the same if it was socially acceptable!

Luckily after Urgent Care I gave him another treatment and it did the trick.  I put him to bed but woke throughout the night to check on him.  I had to keep him home Tuesday since his fever went up to 100.5 plus his breathing was still questionable.  His Dr said it was just a virus and has him on breathing treatments every 4 hours this week, it's painful as each treatment takes 30-50 minutes depending on whether it's one medicine or 2!  I ended up taking a sick day on Tuesday since he wanted to be held all day so we got some good time together, especially since he only napped for 40 minutes!

Sat on the stool all by himself and is SO proud!

Oh stop it Mommy!

You will not take my new ball from my kung-fu grip!

So work a full day, go to the orthopedic surgeon, go to Urgent Care all in one day, just another day in the life of us!  No wonder I am always tired!!!

What I Learned

Well, I didn't blog about Mother's Day because quite honestly, it wasn't the best.  The kids woke up early as usual, Riley came into our room crying because she wanted to do to school and go to reading and it was Sunday and school was closed so she couldn't.  Jacob started the day off fine but by mid-morning he had between 99-100 fever and was drooling so we wrote it off as teething.  We went for a walk for coffee, came home and went to lunch.  Mid-lunch Jacob melted down (not surprising since it was just about nap time) and wouldn't eat (surprising), by the time we got him home is temperature was 102, ok, not teething.  I put him down for a nap since he wanted to sleep but he woke up less than an hour later (during that time I worked) and he was laying in bed awake, completely out of it, he was making eye contact but not engaging like he usually does.  I took his temperature and it was 103.9!!!  Mother's Day was officially over, we gave him some Motrin and put him in the bath tub to try to cool him off and I made a frantic call to the on-call nurse.  I absolutely hate fevers and didn't want to have another seizure on our hands.  Fortunately he slept well that night, though I was up every couple of hours to check his temperature and I was able to get him an 8AM appointment with the Dr.  He wasn't eating or drinking well so there was clearly something wrong and I was worried it was an ear infection since he was grabbing the side of his face.

Monday I stayed home with him and attempted to work.  I got him to the Dr at 8AM and he was still out of it though he did have a little more of his spunk back.  No ear infection but poor little dude had his first sore throat, which explains the drooling.  He was also cutting a tooth but the Dr said his throat was bright red, not strep though because there was no pus.  So she told me to just give him Motrin/Tylenol combo every 3 hours which would also keep his fever down.  So the rest of the day we had our big adventure together, this is what I learned:

  • He knows way more than we think he knows (he got mad at me an swatted at me and I asked him if he needed to go to time out and he walked over and sat himself in time out, what!?!  This kid may be easier to discipline than his sister after all!)
  • He's still a sweet, cuddly boy, who spent his whole time touching me, as long as he was touching me, he was happy.
  • He learned to climb onto the couch and would lean up against me and rub my arm and play with my hair, sweet, sweet boy, I hope he remains a Momma's boy always!
  • He gives great hugs, and kisses and is not shy with them and does not hold back, he would spontaneously lean over and hug me
  • He loves bags and putting stuff in them
  • He loves his sister to death (I told him we needed to go get her from school and he went upstairs and stood in front of her door thinking she had been there the whole time)
  • That I miss him incredibly (and his sister) when I am at work!

I'm not sure what this face was but it was funny enough to post

Jacob and his man purse, he loves to bring it every where and it's stuffed with wipes (clean), goldfish and pacifiers, you know, all of the important stuff!

My handsome pants!

I also taught Jacob to say "ah" so that I could check his throat to see if it was still red.

It's My Birthday, Or At Least It Was

Thursday was my birthday and I decided to work since I have been taking so much time off for the kids' birthday (my how times have changed) and I have MLK Day off so I figured I would go in.  My awesome co-workers brought me some balloons and then the 3 of us went out for Thai food for lunch.  Fun times!

Marc went all out for my birthday, we picked up sushi for dinner and her got me loads of presents, all well thought out.  And of course what's a birthday without Baskin' Robbins birthday cake.

Meant to post pictures and blog about this earlier but the kids got sick on Friday, at least they waited until after my birthday to spike the fevers!

I got  a call at 9:20 on Friday morning that Jacob had a 101 fever and I needed to pick him up.  I got him and called the Dr on the way home since he also had a cough and I was really worried about pneumonia.  By the time we got home his  fever was over 102 so I was so glad I got him in at noon.  When the Dr saw him she couldn't believe how bad his ear infection was, which would explain why he's stopped trying to walk and the sleepless nights.  She actually said it was so gross that I should see it (I declined). She put him on augmentim which a stronger antibiotic but taking into account the stomach issues he just got over, we are on 2 yogurts a day as well as a powder probiotic to help maintain his tummy help.  Riley was scheduled for her 4 year well check at 4:15 but when I described her cough and symptoms and considering what Jacob looked like she changed it to a sick visit.  Sure enough double ear infection for her too!  Ugh!  We may be heading back to the ENT for her as well.  We'll see how this round of antibiotics go, same yogurt and probiotic regimen for her as well.  Fun times over here!

We got Riley's weight and height, at 4 she's 30lbs (10.44 percentile) and 37.8in (12.29 percentile), little pipsqueak.  We go for the official well check Feb 1, hopefully ears will be cleared up by then!  I ask her Dr about her feet and she noticed a huge difference between Riley's left and right foot.  Ah, I just wish I knew what to do about her foot!

An Answer

One of the Doctors in our pediatrician office called last night and at first I thought, how nice they are checking on Jacob.  She started the conversation by asking how he was doing, if he was improving, what his personality was like.  Then she started to ask questions like if we had been traveling, if we went camping, etc and I knew something was up.  Then she broke the news that the lab had called to inform her that Jacob tested positive for C. Difficile, a bacteria that lives in the stomach and not to google it or go on WebMd because all of this horrible stuff would come up.  True story because I went on it today before his appointment and it causes colitis and deaths from it are on the rise!  I was a little freaking out considering he was at day care and not home with me.  The bacteria generally multiplies and causes diarrhea after a bout with antibiotics because the antibiotics kill both the good and bad bacteria.  In Jacob's case we're not sure how it was able to multiply and cause the diarrhea because he hasn't been on antibiotics since the beginning of November but they found traces of the toxin in one of his cultures.  It's generally treated with a strong antibiotic but given that Jacob is so young and that he's been improving on his own the Doctors felt that the negatives of the antibiotic outweighed the benefits of it killing off the bacteria.  I did some research online and it said that probiotics are the best way to combat C. Diff so he's still on 2 yogurts a day (I should seriously buy stock in YoBaby!) and at this point we're just waiting it out and watching him for signs that it's getting worse.  He's starting to eat more and we're introducing normal food back to him, Jacob is so over the bland diet!  We also have to keep him on formula until he's over this as they were afraid the whole milk would upset his tummy.  Ugh!  Our diaper count for the last 2 weeks is well over 100 at this point!  And fortunately his diaper rash is on the mend.  You would never know the kid was so sick, he's still as smiley and happy as ever and has started giving us high fives and pointing at objects that get his attention or things that he wants.

At least we have an answer!

It's Always Something

Jacob has been pretty sick the past week and a half, it started the Friday before Christmas, he came down with really bad diarrhea, we figured it was from teething because he was drooling a ton, was grabbing his ears and had his hand constantly in his mouth.  He also started biting me again, all tell tale signs of teething and he usually gets diarrhea while teething so we didn't think much of it since he had no other signs of being sick, no fever, no rash, no other signs.  Plus the Dr told us a week ago that his molars were coming in.  Well by Christmas day it was out of control, he was going about 12 times a day and his poor little toosh was fire red and he screamed each time he went.  No matter what we gave him it went straight through him and he could literally take 3 bites before he was screaming for a diaper change.  Marc took him in on Wednesday to the Dr because I had to work.  The Dr said it was either teething (she thought his molars would cut through in the next day or so but have yet to come in) or a virus and if it wasn't better to come back Friday or Saturday, she did give a prescription diaper cream to help with his diaper rash.

Friday it wasn't any better and his rash had started to bleed because it was so acidic and not getting any relief.  We took him in late Friday afternoon and the Dr was very concerned because it had been over a week.  Plus when he felt his stomach it was very bloated and caused my poor little man a lot of discomfort.  He ordered some blood work as well as stool samples (we came armed with a bag full of dirty diapers), we seriously changed 4 or 5 diapers an hour on Friday, it was out of control.  He did a full metabolic blood panel (which broke my heart as they pulled blood), tested for viruses and parasites in his stools, and tested for Celiac disease since my brother just tested positive for  Gluten intolerance.  Of course I didn't sleep all night Friday with worry.  The Dr put Jacob on a B.R.A.T. diet and that has seemed to help some in the past few days and also said that since his rash had become an open wound it had gotten infected so he has an antibiotic ointment which seems to be helping.  Friday night his blood work came back, his glucose was high, his calcium was high and albumin was high.  I made the mistake of going on WebMd (which I should know better given the Drs recommendations of not going on there when Riley was diagnosed with her clubfeet) and the feedback was grim.  The elevated glucose and albumin indicated Type 1 diabetes.  The elevated calcium could be an indication of cancer, I was heartbroken that something could seriously be wrong with my sweet Jacob.  He just turned 1!!! And of course all night Friday night there were a plethora of St Judd's Children's Hospital commercials, what if we became those families!?!  Oh and while we were there I asked the Dr to look at Riley's ears because I had noticed her grabbing at them and she had started complaining that her ears hurt.  Sure enough, ear infection.  Seriously!?!  Enough is enough!

I waited all day Saturday for his stool and Celiac results to come back, suddenly going gluten free didn't seem so bad!!!  Riley could see the concern on my face and when we were driving home from an errand Saturday she asked if I was worried about Jacob.  I told her yes and she said "Don't worry mommy he's ok, I just know he is."  Sweet sweet girl, she's actually been quite loving and caring towards him, especially during diaper changes when it's clear he's in excruciating pain.

Sunday morning Jacob had us up super early for a diaper change, when we were done I decided to check my email before trying to go back to bed, there it was, an email from the Dr, at 6:04AM on a Sunday morning, on the Dr's birthday, while he was on vacation.  We seriously have awesome Drs in the practice we go to!!!  My hands were shaking as I logged onto the website to check the message.

So far all labs are coming back reassuring. Even the bloodwork. Stool studies do not show any parasite, blood work shows normal liver and kidney function and he does not have celiac disease. The elevated blood sugar is normal for someone not fasting. Also his elevated albumin shows that his nutritional reserves are actually very good. Hope the diarrhea is improving.

Suddenly the weight of the world had been lifted from my shoulders.  Sunday morning I took some extra time with the kids, you never know what tomorrow brings, I didn't even shower until 11AM (of course I had my coffee at my normal time, lets not get too crazy!) but rather I joined the kids in the playroom to help Riley put YaYa down for her nap since she too is very sick and I helped Jacob vroom vrooom his cars.

Unfortunately we thought Jacob was on the upswing, but his diarrhea has seemed to pick up again.  A later email from the Dr said he thought it was just an awful virus but his diaper rash is getting better with the antibiotic cream.  We've currently gone through 2 tubes of Butt Paste, 2 tubes of prescription diaper cream, a tub of Bag Balm, 3 4-packs of YoBaby, and almost 90 diapers since this started but it's all ok if it means there is nothing seriously wrong with our baby.  His spirits are good, he wants to play, he desperately wants off of the B.R.A.T. diet but I think we'll be heading back to the Dr on Wednesday if he doesn't have a drastic improvement tomorrow.  He's lost a little weight and was 21lbs 13oz on Friday (no idea how since he's literally been living off of Gatorade and toast for the past 10 days) and somehow the 55th percentile on weight.  I would expect him to be lower on Wednesday if we take him back as his face looks thinner and his thighs are less pillowy.

I captured this photo of the kids this morning during breakfast, Riley freely went up to Jacob and hugged him and Jacob leaned forward, wrapped his arms around Riley and hugged him back.  Such a tender moment.  As jealous as Riley is of Jacob I know she genuinely loves him (it's no secret Jacob loves his big sister).

Moments like these I take away all the mean things I've said about Riley.  She really is a sweet kid.

My new favorite brother/sister photo.  I love these kiddos!

Christmas Day

Christmas Day is always blah for us, we used to rock the movies but with an almost 4 year old and a 1 year old that's not possible now.  Jacob has had an upset stomach since Saturday but Sunday he seemed better so I forced us out of the house (in the pouring rain) to go to Gymboree and then to lunch at the new Corner Bakery that opened in Pleasanton, I am beyond excited.  We needed to get out of the house, we were practically in the house all day on Saturday because of rain and I knew Monday afternoon and Tuesday would be lock down and we were all getting antsy and annoyed with each other.  Jacob had so much fun at Gymboree, he is obsessed with Gymbo the Clown and we actually used his Hanukkah money from my aunt to buy him a stuffed one since it was on sale which he loves snuggling against.  We so needed to get out of the house, it was great!  Riley came with us and the older sister, also named Riley, of one of the girl's in Jacob's class was there and they ended up playing together the whole time.

Monday Jacob seemed better still so we ventured out in the afternoon to the park.  We grabbed a coffee before it shut down and headed over to our favorite park, one of the moms came up to me while Riley was sliding and said we looked so "zen" both of us carrying our coffees and the kids so mellow in the double stroller, like we had it all together.  I laughed and thanked her profusely because it is all a rouse!  Our life is pure chaos and she happened to hit us in the calm before the storm so to look for us in 15 minutes and all hell would probably be breaking loose!

Sure enough, Jacob wanted nothing to do with the swing, slide or anything to do with the park, refused to go back into his stroller and was pretty much a hot mess on our trip to Safeway to pick up a few things and then back home.  Once we got home we realized why, his tummy had taken a turn for the worse and his bottom was fire red.  :(  Poor little guy!  Marc took him to the Dr on Monday (I'm stuck at work) and the Dr isn't sure if it's teething or a virus but the poor kid can not keep anything in, it goes right through him.  He can tolerate formula the best so I've purchased what is hopefully our last tub of formula.  He has lost about 2 lbs in the last 4 days and we have gone through nearly 60 diapers!!!  His stomach was progressively worse all day Tuesday and Wednesday morning he was up at 1:45AM, 4:40AM, and 5:30AM.   At 1:45AM I made the executive decision to take him into the Dr, the poor kid can't even sit down.  So needless to say if we did celebrate Christmas it would probably be the worst Christmas EVER!  I am so over the sickness, he just got over bronchilitis, Riley has a cold, I am just over it!

Zip lining at the park, that girl has some muscles, she held on all the way there and back!

Jacob crawling around the "water" park area (it was all dried up for the winter)

Riley wanted to do arts and crafts on Christmas Day and she found our owl making kit that her Aunt Jill gave her last year so we made paper owls together!

On Top of It All...

On top of all that was going on with Poppa Jack, Saturday Jacob woke up wheezing.  Poppa Jack had some albuterol so we tried that but it didn't make a dent in his wheezing for more than 5 minutes.  He was really tired so I left him sleep, he slept for 2 hours, woke up, took a bottle and went back to sleep for another 2 1/2 hours.  He refused all table foods, which should have been my key indicator that something was wrong with him.  When he woke up from his second nap his wheezing was really bad.  We decided to take him to Urgent Care before Poppa's party rather than after it.  My brother took Riley to the party and Marc and I took him to Urgent Care.  When we got there the Dr could see him from behind the counter struggling to breath so he rushed us back to an exam room.  He started him immediately on 2 doses of albuterol because his blood oxygen level was 93/94.  The 2 doses worked for about 15 minutes and then he started wheezing again and his blood oxygen levels dropped once again to about 95.  They gave him a dose of prednisone and another breathing treatment and the same thing happened.  They gave him one last shot before they were going to send us to the hospital to be admitted.  So we gave another dose of albuterol, by this time he was so exhausted he actually fell asleep which helped relax him and allowed him to take in the medication better.  Fortunately this dosage stuck and we were able to take him back to the hotel, we missed the party but my brother was awesome and brought us the works back to the hotel.

That night was a long night, I had to wake up every 2 hours to give him a breathing treatment, fortunately he slept through all but one, even though that machine is literally the loudest machine ever!  I seriously felt like I was nursing again!!!

He also had an ear infection again so we left urgent care with Albuterol, Prednisone, a travel inhaler that now lives in my diaper bag, and an antibiotic for his ear infection.

We left Florida Monday because I had an appointment scheduled at his pediatrician.  She finally diagnosed him with asthma because he's had 3 big episodes, 2 of which required Urgent Care.  She thinks he'll outgrow it since it's brought on by illness, she said they typically outgrow this type of asthma so fingers crossed.  We're trying Pulmicort, an inhaled steroid every night for a month to see if that helps lessen the severity of attacks.

Needless to say, I am emotionally (and physically) exhausted after this week!

Oh and little dude was 20lbs 4oz on Tuesday at the Dr!

Sickness

Well Tuesday Riley took a turn for the worse.  Monday night/Tuesday morning was rough.  She woke up at about 1:30 with the runs, then Jacob was up at 2:30 and then Riley was up again at 3:30 throwing up in her bed.  When she woke up in the morning she complained of leg pain again and stomach ache.  I brought her downstairs and tried to get her to eat and drink.  She drank a bit but then threw up, then she rested, then threw up, and so on until about Noon.  There was a point where she was laying on the ground in her make-shift bed and she hadn't spoken in over an hour, I texted Marc to tell him and he said to take her to the Doctor.  I had already called in the morning and there were no appointments at all with any of the Doctors so I had to take her to Urgent Care.  This is how she looked most of the day:

When she woke up she was really slurring her words and wasn't making sense so I scooped her up and pack Jacob up and brought her to Urgent Care.  It was one of the worst experiences of my life.  She was so out of it and so hysterical that nothing would calm her down.  She was crying but no tears were coming out, she wouldn't let the doctor examine her, she wouldn't let the nurse give her an anti-nausea  medicine, all she wanted to do was go home.

Well the Doctor did his exam and decided we should go to the ER, they had better equipment to deal with her.  I personally agreed, Riley was not herself and something was seriously wrong and I was getting kind of scared and just wanted her in a place where they could take care of her properly.  While they were getting the discharge papers together they were able to get an anti-nausea medicine in her and she fell asleep on my lap.  When she woke up she was perkier, she was making sense and she wasn't slurring her words.  I was able to get her to take some water and she asked to go potty.  The nurses were encouraged so they got a urine sample and got Riley to agree to giving blood which they sent over to the hospital.  They decided that Riley would be better off waiting for the results at home so we were able to go home and wait for the results.  I still couldn't get her to drink, she got home, laid down in the family room and fell asleep.  She refused to sleep in her bed yesterday, I think she was scared and wanted to be near me.  So we were there a total of 3 1/2 hours and she was diagnosed with dehydration.  After she woke up at home we had her drinking Gatorade and Pedialyte and were able to get her to drink enough to pee so we didn't have to go to the hospital.  Her tests results showed low sodium levels and an abnormality in one of her liver tests so I have to take her back on Friday for a recheck and to see if we need to recheck it or if her Dr thinks it's just from being dehydrated.

Wednesday she was much better!  She ate well, drank well, and was pretty much back to her old self.

First Sick Day

And on the 7th day of day care, Jacob had a sick day.  Yep, I think we hit some sort of record, 6 days in day care before getting sick.  Last night Jacob was not happy, screaming, fussy, rubbing his eyes.  He even screamed through his bath which usually calms him and then when I gave him his before bed bottle (which he can't live without) he projectile vomited all over me and his room.  It was actually quite impressive, he managed to projectile vomit while still eating causing a water fountain effect, he's got mad skills.  So needless to say he did not sleep through the night since he lost most of the contents of that bottle and woke up at 4:15 to feed.  When Marc brought him in his eyes were completely crusted, great, pink eye.  So I kept him home and the stars aligned and I was able to get him an appointment with his Dr (who actually had appointments open, lately it's been so hard to get an appointment with her unless I make the appointment weeks in advance, maybe I should just schedule a bunch of random ones for the first few months of day care!) for 50 minutes after my appointment (have I mentioned that I've been sick for 2 weeks!!!).  So we saw my Dr and I have an ear infection and sinus infection and she thought it looked like Jacob had pink eye, then we headed downstairs for Jacob's appointment and we saw his Dr who wasn't convinced that he had pink eye but gave us drops just in case it gets worse, she did classify it in the computer as acute conjunctivitis but told us to just watch him and if it gets worse to use the drops but at his age it's common for the sinuses to drain through the tear ducts.  So basically the two of us are a hot mess but we got another day together and we loved it! :)  I love Riley to death, I think you all know that, but there is something super special about the mother/son relationship.  I definitely hoped for a sister for Riley before we found out I was pregnant with a boy but now that I am experiencing the mother/son relationship, I thank my lucky stars for my sweet boy and while I don't like either of us to be sick, I am grateful for the time with him, especially since he's growing so fast.  Jacob jumped ANOTHER percentile on weight, he is now at 14lbs 11.5oz and went from the 23rd percentile to the 26th in just under 2 weeks.  Love my chunky monkey!

Not too sick for smiles for mommy!

All boy!  Jacob loves to play with his balls!

Sick Day

Monday I got our first ever call from day care saying that Riley had a fever and needed to be picked up.  I was already on my way so it was no big deal but this doozy of a virus hit her hard and fast.  Monday morning she was chipper and feeling great (which is rare Monday mornings because Riley is NOT a morning person and not a Monday person either).  I went into her classroom and she was laying on a cot in the corner, she barely lifted her head to great me, so NOT Riley.  I usually get plowed over by her running and jumping into my arms with her yelling "my mommy's here!" so I knew she was feeling pretty crummy.  Sign number 2, she didn't want to stop by the baby room to say hi to the babies her her infant teacher "Miss Karen" and she passed up the crackers on the way out.  By the time I got her home and bathed her fever was 102 and climbing.  Her teachers told me that they noticed her rubbing her ear after they noticed her fever so I pretty much knew we had an ear infection on our hands so I called the Dr on the way home.  Sign 3 she was in bad shape, she sat on my lap for over a 1/2 hour cuddling and watching a Tinkerbell movie, it was the sitting still for an extended period of time that was a give away, not the interest in Tinkerbell (she's a total girly girl these days).  So Tuesday morning I took her to the Dr and sure enough, ear infection, so much for tubes!  This one threw me off because there was no drainage like the ones in the past have had since the tubes.  Sign 4 she was in bad shape, when we got home from the Dr she went straight to the couch and fell asleep, she NEVER does that!  Sign 5 she was in bad shape, she was very clingy, needy, agreeable, and there were no "Riley do it's" in her vocabulary.

Asleep on the couch.  She never does this
Riley spent the majority of the day on the couch with no interest in her toys.  By Tuesday evening her fever spiked to a little over 104 and I freaked out and called the Dr, fortunately with the help of our friends Motrin and Tylenol she didn't really wake up throughout the night so we still got some sleep.  Wednesday Marc stayed home and Riley was on the mend but still had a fever so no day care on Thursday either.

Thursday was fever free the whole day and Marc and I both needed to go to the office so Friday Riley was back to day care.  They said she was definitely not herself, very cranky and not very active but she didn't have a fever so they didn't call.  Poor kid got hit hard!  We seem to be on the mend now, though we had to postpone swim lessons a week thanks to the ear infection.  Hopefully we'll have the all clear to start next week!
