A Verbal Explosion

I can't believe my baby is so big now!  In just a short month he's going to be 2 YEARS OLD!  How on earth!  He has hit such a verbal explosion in the last week it's unbelievable.  My new favorite is "I love you" which comes out "I wuv ooo."  So adorable.  He's also putting more and more words together including "Ahpane on my bah" which is another favorite.  He also finally calls Riley, "RaRa" which is a step up from screaming at her.  He's pretty much saying anything and everything now and among his favorites are: No, Yesh, outside, up, down, walk, bag.

He was home sick last Friday and I heard giggles coming from the kitchen and I went in and he was going through my diaper bag and had my sunglasses out and was wearing them giggling hysterically.  So he's got a bit of stinker in him as well.

Right now Jacob is OBSESSED with The Wiggles, I have a love hate relationship with them.  They have help tremendously with his breathing treatments but now he wants to watch them on his DVD all the time and walks around singing "Aye Aye" from the Monkey Man song.  And I now have it stuck in my head!

Our Journey Continues

Well it looks like our clubfoot journey isn't quite over yet.  We took Riley to Dr H on Friday and as suspected, he suggested that we perform the ATT surgery on her left foot, he would probably also lengthen the tendon on the bottom of her foot.  He said this foot is eventually going to need surgical intervention no matter what we do, the AFO just isn't cutting it.  So I figure if we're going to do it, we might as well do it now, why wait?  I can't say I'm surprised by this recommendation, instead of leaving upset, I actually left at ease, we finally have a game plan and a clear path ahead and deep down inside I must know that this is right for her foot.

Truth be told, I've been carrying around a lot of worries over Riley lately - mostly about what the future holds for her.  Will she be teased because kids will notice her feet are different?  Will she have pain when she's older?  Will she be able to do all of the things that she wants to do and not be limited by her birth defect?  We've never let it stop her before or be an excuse but what if one day it physically is an excuse.  I've rarely been a "whoa is us" person about her birth defect (I've had my pity days sure, but overall I've not let it bother me too much).  I've just sort of taken it as a lesson in life, a tool to become a stronger, better person but I find myself asking a lot these days "Why her?"  I was teased mercilessly as a kid for being overweight and I don't want Riley to be teased over something she has no control over.  I could have cut back on the burritos, candy, TV and gone for a run but Riley can't control this and so I am left asking "Why her?"  So I want this taken care of and her out of her AFO by the time she starts kindergarten.  I don't want her going into public school with a visible sign of her being different; call me vain, judge me all you want but I want her to blend in and make friends without the stigma of her AFO following her around.  Kids are mean and I don't want them to have any extra ammunition against her.

But this is just another bump in the road.  Ri of course had Dr H cracking up because she actually asked for a cast.  I think she likes the attention the cast brings.  Dr H can't do anything until after the first of the year due to his schedule, and I asked that she at least get her wish of having her bouncy house birthday party before she starts casting so we'll start 4-6 weeks of casting sometime after her birthday.  He needs to get her foot aligned properly before he can do the surgery, it's pretty out of whack and off it's axis.  He offered to set up a second opinion with Dr Dobbs if we wanted to fly to St Louis for that but Marc and I both instantly agreed that that was not necessary.  Dr H has been treating Riley since she was 11 days old and just him offering to send us to St Louis for a consult shows me that he has her best interest at heart.  Then we'll do the surgery, probably sometime in March I would assume.  We don't have a date yet but his surgery scheduler is going to call me in the next few weeks to get her scheduled.  He said she could either go home from the hospital that day or would just need to stay the night, I think I would choose a night just to ensure that we can get her pain managed and have the extra support of the nurses.  We're leaning at doing the surgery at John Muir (where both kids were born) versus Lucille Packard Children's Hospital just because we won't have to cross bridges and it will be easier to balance Jacob, though my mom has offered to come and help with him.  Those are the details I know for now.  So for now, I just need to find the words to explain to Riley that she needs to have surgery on her foot,  that's not going to be an easy or fun conversation, and figure out what sort of leave of absence I can take from work.

New Trick

This is Jacob's new trick, I must say I absolutely love it and can not get enough of it.  He usually raises his hand when he says this, sometimes if I am lucky, both hands, he's annoyed with me here because I was trying to capture it on video so no arm raising but I promise he does raise his hand when he answers my question!

Jacob has been talking a ton more!  He even said Tuesday morning "Ahpane on my bah!" He's obsessed with airplanes and his bahs (pacifiers) so he was elated to realize there are a couple with airplanes on them.

Not Sure Why...

Not sure why there is a Radio Flier wagon in my living room but it kept him busy for an hour so I'll go with it!

Just Doesn't Seem Right

Last week I was in Florida for a National Sales Meeting.  It was my first trip back since Poppa Jack passed exactly one year ago today.  It just didn't seem right being there, knowing I couldn't go visit with him.  How beside himself with happiness he would have been if he were still alive and knew I was coming to town for my new job.  Truth be told he was the first person I wanted to call when I got my promotion and he would have been elated to have me there.  But while he was physically gone, there were reminders of him everywhere while I was there.  I was pretty grumpy, sad, emotional being there.  I was able to sneak away from my meetings and dinners and have dinner with my Aunt, Uncle, and one of my cousins.  We told Poppa Jack stories, laughed about him and it felt so much better after that.  But still on this one year anniversary of his passing, I still yearn to tell him things, call him for advice, have him assure me Riley will be ok with her foot, take joy in Jacob, and tell me he always has and will have faith in me.  I know we had 99 years and 51 weeks with him on this earth and I am so thankful he met my children, had a relationship with Riley but still I want more time with him.  I know it's greedy considering he was 6 days shy of being 100 but still, I want my kids to know and remember what an amazing man he was.  I can only hope that my kids value family the way he did, that they have his work ethic and his undeniable generosity, pride, honor and integrity.  I am so thankful for his guidance, support, and love of me and my family.  I am honored to have a son named in his honor but still, on this day, exactly a year from his passing, I miss him more than ever.

Sunday Fun Day

Sunday we woke up to a treat, Jacob naked, there was poop involved, we'll just leave it at that.  I will give them credit because they did sleep in past 7AM which is rare around here.  After our clean-up of Jacob's room we decided to head to the Oakland Zoo and give our annual memberships a maiden voyage.  We had a great time, we kicked off the trip with rides this time so Riley didn't hack us the whole time about riding the rides.  We did the roller coaster together and then Riley did the planes.  She was SO happy!  Then we went and saw all of our favorite animals.  It was a great day at the zoo!

Every trip Marc and Riley make a pressed penny together.

They love the giraffes!

Jacob loves animals

He's so gentle and excited around them

This is the first time we let Jacob in and out of the stroller as he's starting to listen better and follows directions now

Not a huge fan of sitting on the frog

She'll ham it up anywhere

This is the first time the chimp has been down

This guy is my favorite, he's always putting on a show!
After the zoo we went to Walnut Creek for lunch and then some shopping!  The ultimate in Sunday Fun Days!

All The Rage

Last Sunday I had to leave for a business trip (big fat BOO!) so Marc took Riley over to her friend Jessie's house and they made these rainbow loom bracelets.  I had seen them pinned on Pinterest but didn't realize they were all the rage until last night when Marc and I had to go to a Safeway Gala at my work and we had Riley's phonics teacher come babysit.  She brought her rainbow loom and said that they made bracelets for probably 2 hours.  She said Jacob helped and Riley sat quietly (I'm going to need to get me a rainbow loom!) and made bracelet after bracelet!  What's more, she wore her bracelets ALL day Sunday!  She looks so grown up walking around with this latest fab on her wrists.  The days are long but the years are short as I realize how fast the kids are growing up!

We went to this amazing Safeway Foundation Gala Saturday night and scored these cupcakes as a take home gift.  Viola Davis (The Help) spoke as the Gala focused on ending Childhood Hunger and Kelly Clarkson performed!  Unfortunately, we missed her as she didn't go on-stage until 10 and we needed to get home to let the babysitter get home but it was fun to get dressed up and have a fancy meal and mingle with co-workers!

Trick or Treat! (2013)

Well Halloween is in books and it's officially holiday season in my opinion.  Hanukkah is just 26 days away!  (EEK) and everyone around here is in the festive season of holidays and birthdays galore.  It kicked off with a fabulous Halloween!  We spent it with the usual suspects, our neighbors Alex, Shari, and Ryan and our old neighbors, Elisabeth, Ian and Owen.  Fun times.  We hosted this year and trick or treated in our neighborhood, which is great because it's flat and easy to maneuver.  Ri was so excited to have her friends over and go trick or treating and Jacob caught on pretty quickly and spent his time trying to keep up with the big kids.

I was going to give Riley a freebie on her AFO for trick or treating.  She's supposed to wear it when she's active but I was going to let her do Halloween with out her, I'm sure Dr H wouldn't have opposed to that.  When I asked her if she wanted to take it off to leave it at home she said "No, I'm going to wear it because I'm proberry going to be running so I should have it on."  As much as Riley drives me crazy and gives me grey hairs, I am reminded of how truly special she is when she says stuff like this.  How many 4 1/2 year olds would respond like this!?!  I was so proud of her mature decision.

And at the same time, Jacob had a hard time keeping up with the big kids, elephants move slow!  So Ri would go to the houses and get candy and get some for him, well we all thought this was such a nice big sister gesture until we got home and went through the candy and put it in Ziploc bags for safe keeping and realized she had 3x the amount as Jacob.  She was getting candy for him and pocketing a few pieces every house.  I'm actually pretty impressed that she figured that out!  Oh Riley, always keeping me on my toes!

S'more cupcakes please!

Riley served Jacob, Doritos and guacamole. Nice and healthy

Buddies

These 3 have been trick or treating together since before they were 1!

Photo bomb ala Jacob

Don't worry!  Jacob has the beer!

Catching on

I still crack up over this costume.

Little man is all tuckered out!

Getting a little help from daddy!
