Mommy Goes on a Business Trip...

And all I get is a Tony the Tiger stuffed animal!  He's G-r-r-r-eat!

We (well I, since I travel more than Marc) have gotten into a bad habit of bringing Riley back presents from trips.  Mine are a lot lamer than Marc's because Marc goes to Singapore and Japan and I go to Omaha, Naperville, and now Battle Creek, MI.  And really, how can anything from Battle Creek compete with Japan Mickey???  They didn't have much at our company store so I ordered Tony the Tiger on-line and then also ordered her a Dolphin Pillow Pet from Amazon (so that I could get free shipping on a book that I wanted), at the airport I got her a toy airplane and an Elmo coloring book and crayons.  Yep, bad habits but it makes our time apart a little easier.  They told me at day care today that they could tell I was home because Riley was in a much better mood, last week she was pretty grumpy.  They also said that last week every time they played outside, Riley would point to the sky and say "Mommy on airplane!"  How stinkin' cute is that girl???

Party!

Today we headed over to a park in San Ramon for Riley's friend Mitchell's 2nd birthday party!  Riley had so much fun seeing all of her friends, every time a new one came to the party she would run across the park and greet them, it was hilarious to see her be the welcoming committee.  The kids were so cute playing together and all of their parents are so super nice, it's such a nice group of friends that she has.  Of course when we tried to leave to go home she had a classic 2 year old temper tantrum complete with laying on her face on the cement and screaming!

Check out the static electricity on that hair!

Well We Tried

Yesterday we took Riley to her 1 month, post-stopping the brace check-up at Dr H.  I have been concerned about her left foot for about a week now.  I've noticed every so often when she is walking or running that it seems to turn inward and kind of rolls on the outside.  Unfortunately, I know my feet, because Dr. H saw what I was seeing as well.  So back in the brace we go for 3 months and then we head back for another check-up to see if it's any better.  We knew this was a possibility all along and we told Riley the night before that if Dr H said that she had to wear her "night night" shoes again that she had to and that she couldn't fight us.  We told her she had to start wearing her "night nights" again and she said very seriously "No night nights."  So we asked Dr H to deliver the news, it was really sweet.  He sat her on the counter and told her that she needed to wear her night nights so she could grow up to marry an orthopedic surgeon and be a heart surgeon herself.  She agreed to wear her night-nights.  Beverly helped us out by telling her if she wore her night-nights each night without a fight she could have a lollipop every morning.  This is what she sent us home with - I think they spoil Riley just a little bit.

We also had the tendon transfer talk, Riley might need it done on her left foot after all, only time will tell but we're hoping that the brace fixes the problem.  And we don't really know if it's a problem yet, thank goodness I'm neurotic and insisted on coming back a month later so we caught it super early.  It was a very early conversation and may never happen but we're preparing for the fact that she may need it on the left foot.  The right foot still looks fantastic, that darn left foot has been the bane of my existence for the last 2 1/2 years!

RiRi of course is our RiRi and has taken it all in stride.  She wanted to help buckle them last night and tonight she sat nicely while I put them on.  Friday I cried as I strapped them on.  This morning she had her lollipop and was very excited about it.  I hate night-night shoes, I hate clubfeet, and I hate that Riley has to go through this.  She doesn't deserve this and I just don't understand why things happen sometimes.  It breaks my heart to see her in them again and as I folded her footy pjs that she has grown to love so much in the past month to hide them in her dresser, my heart broke all over again because I know it's only a matter of time before she wants to wear them and I'll have to tell her no.

So we tried to live clubfoot free and put clubfoot behind us but it looks like it's here to stay, at least for now.

Mash It Mash It

Somehow Riley's bananas got buried under a bunch of stuff last week and we forgot to feed her them, don't worry she still had plenty of fruit, I'm a little shocked that she didn't ask for them but oh well, we were stuck with a bunch of brown bananas.  There's nothing better to do with brown bananas than to make banana bread!  Of course my budding baker had to get involved, her job, to mash the bananas before we added them to the batter.  She stood there saying "mash it mash it" as she helped me make the banana bread.  So cute, love her!

Picnic

Marc had a party after work tonight so it was just RiRi and I.  I had planned to take her down to the Farmer's Market for dinner but we stayed after school and Riley played with her friend Joey for a half hour so we had no time.  I also had no idea what to have for dinner so to make leftovers look more appealing I decided we would have a picnic in our living room!

Not quite sure what's going on but getting ready for our picnic

Picnics are cool!

A Reminder Of What Life Is All About

Fridays my work closes at Noon for Summer Hours so I was able to go get Riley a little early, she's been missing me and I've been missing her since I went back to work so I was looking forward to a little time with her with no pressure to get her bathed, fed, and in bed for school the next day.  I headed over there around 3:30 after her nap and snack and planned on picking her up, heading home, and then walking down to the park for some play time and maybe some frozen yogurt.  When I got to her classroom they were doing circle time, no one saw me come in because they were all engrossed in "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," so I stood off to the side and watched Riley interact in circle time.  After a few moments she headed over to her friend Jimmy who was reading his own book and they looked at the pictures together (quietly, which for Riley is shocking).  A few minutes later the story was over and Jimmy looked up and said "Riley your Mommy is here!"  Well, since the secret was out, Riley came running over, yelling "My mommy here!" and asked if she could go outside, I had told her the week before when she told us she was afraid to go outside that  I would come one day and go outside with her and show her that there was nothing to be afraid of, I guess she was having me deliver on my promise to her.  The older kids in the class were heading out.  Since her teachers and I had spoken about her hesitancy to go outside and I was there her teachers let her go outside with the pre-school group so that I could go with her and show her it was ok.  Riley was SO excited to have me head outside with her and she jumped right in line against the wall.  I was standing off to the side and Riley said "No mommy, you line up here [for] outside!"  Apparently I was breaking the rules, leave it to RiRi to set me straight.  It was stinking adorable.

After we got outside Riley nabbed a piece of chalk and she had me follow her around while she colored on the wall.  Then we chased bubbles together.  Then more chalk came out and she got me my own piece had me follow her and draw lines on the wall outside with her.  When we got to the end she had me draw her an owl, I told her Monday when she went outside she could go and find the owl and think of me (except that it rained this weekend so the owl is probably gone).  All of her friends came and gave me hugs and wanted me to see their drawings and told me about their Nonna's and their birthday parties and their Batman Capes.  It was awesome!

After the chalk lost it's appeal and after everyone else had ridden the lone tricycle it was Riley's turn (I should mention that she wanted to ride it since the beginning and when I told her it was someone else's turn she did not throw a fit, she just said okay and found something else to do, I was very proud of her maturity).  I was shocked to see that Riley could reach the peddles and peddle on the tricycle (she still can't reach the peddles on her tricycle at home).  She rode it up and down the playground.  When I yelled, "Good job RiRi!" one of her friends informed me that her name was Riley and not RiRi, you have got to love 2 year olds to set you straight!  Then it was time to go in and Riley went right to the wall and lined up for roll call.  She saw 4 pieces of chalk that had been left out and picked them up and handed them to her teacher to put away.  I was so proud of her helpfulness.

Her teacher gave me an impromptu parent-teacher conference and let me know that in the last few months Riley has grown leaps and bounds emotionally; she listens, follows directions, shares and when she does do something wrong that they can see her conscientiously try not to do it again and she always says sorry.  She told us not to be too hard on her when she does make mistakes because adults make mistakes too and she's only 2, it was a good reminder that maybe sometimes our expectations of Riley are a little too high for a 2 year old.  We just know how special she is and how much potential she has so we have high standards for her but it was a good level set that she is only 2 and her teacher was right, adults do make mistakes and so Riley should be entitled to some as well.  They also said she's speaking more like a 3 year old than a 2 year old, she's very verbal and is starting to express her emotions rather than biting or throwing a fit.

After we went inside the play-dough was out so of course we had to play with that, again, Riley shared the cookie cutters with all of her friends. After spending 45 minutes with Riley at school I finally convinced her to leave so that we could go buy cookie dough at Fresh & Easy so that we could make cookies for Daddy, she'll do anything for cookies and her Daddy!

I left her day care feeling so refreshed, realizing that experiences like that is what life is really about, sure I had a plan for the afternoon that got scrapped but seeing Riley beaming with pride and joy at sharing all of her experiences and friends with me was priceless and time with her I will never forget.   And seeing her interact with the kids so nicely made me so proud of her, I asked her teachers if she was just showing off for me (because let's face it, there were some points outside where I could see her showing off) but they said that she almost always interacts that way.  I was just so proud to see her acting so positively and so honored to share her day with her, because let's face it, it won't be all that long until she won't want to be caught dead at school with me.  Sometimes I wish there was a way to just snap a picture or series of events of a moment in time so that you never forget the memory, so that you can relive it over and over again, Friday afternoon was one of those days.

Growing Up So Fast!

Riley just keeps growing and growing.  I can't believe that she was 2 and 4 months on Thursday!  Crazy!  She's talking up a storm, is communicating so well.  She has not wanted to go outside this week at school so when we got home I asked her about it and she was able to tell me that she was scared because there is a gate at day care with an alarm on it and it went off a few times and it was too loud and scared her.  Her explanation wasn't that eloquent but I was able to get the message from her, which blew us away!  She's also sharing very well and her teacher tells me that she's very empathetic when other kids are upset.

So after I put together her photo trend, I realized that she's wearing the same outfit that she wore at 24 months, oops, and she hardly ever wears that outfit!

Mother's Day

The weather didn't quite cooperate on Mother's Day, it was super cold and windy (we're still wearing winter clothes around here!) so my plans to go up to Blackhawk Plaza and have lunch on the pond were scratched.  Instead Riley decided she wanted waffles for breakfast (and of course Eggo wouldn't do) so we went to Country Waffles, not the most glamorous place but they have killer pancakes and waffles.  After brunch and Riley's nap we took a nice walk down to Safeway to do our weekly food shopping.  It was a nice relaxing day and Riley even cooperated for a picture with me!

My LOVE!

Our Little Dare Devil

I came downstairs the other day and Riley had this set up going on, she was coaxing Elmo into jumping with her.

Seems our little dare devil has mastered the art of jumping!

I'm Bringing Home A Baby Bumble Bee

Anyone in Girl Scouts remembers that song, Riley has been singing this song non-stop with me.  Friday I went to get Riley from Day Care and she ran up to me and said "Mommy I make bumble bee."  I had no idea what she was talking about until her teacher told her we had to give me my Mother's Day present. Riley insisted on handing me the present herself and carrying it out to the car, it was so cute the pride that she had in giving me my present, except that she told me again that it was a Bumble Bee (I had still had no idea what was in store for me though), we need to work on the surprise factor.  We went out into the car and Riley had me open my present, sure enough, inside was a Bumble Bee, an abstract Bumble Bee but it is most definitely going to work with me and will be front and center on my desk!  Riley even called Marc over when he got home from work to show him her handy work.

How'd I Do?

Remember this post about me catching up on life?  Well let's see how I did...

1. Get caught up on my scrapbooking since I am still on Riley's BIRTH!!! (Riley will be going to day care most of my 2 weeks off so that this can be accomplished) - Sort of, I am up to month 4 of Riley's life, only 23 more to get caught up completely!

2. Get caught up on my online blogging/scrapbooking class (I think this post may qualify as lesson #6) - Um, yeah, I slacked on this because I was too busy scrapbooking!
3. Put labels on my blog posts - Again, sort of, I think I labeled between 50-100 posts, but I have over 500 posts, so I have a ways to go!
4. Clean out my closet - YES!  I even got rid of a bunch of Riley's old clothes that were super stained and got them donated!
5. Sell old purses on eBay - Another no, but I do have the purses out of my closet and in the kitchen, so that's a step
6. Start working out again - Yes, I was very good about working out while I was off of work but now that I am back I have fallen off the wagon, but I've been told I get a free year membership to 24 Hour Fitness because there is one downstairs from my office, so with going to the office 3 days a week, that's a good excuse to work out again!7. Relax, re-energize, de-stress - Absolutely, I don't remember being so relaxed and happy.  Marc and I even got away for a long weekend to Las Vegas while my parents stayed with Riley.

So I didn't do fantastic on my to-do list but perhaps now that I have a better work-life balance I can check the rest of my items off!

That's What Friends are For

Well I made it through my first week of work.  I must say that it's been hard going back to work, I definitely could get used to being a stay at home mom, I loved not having any pressure other than caring for Riley and Marc and the house had (notice the past tense, one week back and the house is a hot mess already) never been so orderly.  I loved that I didn't constantly tell Riley to get going or that we were running late or that we couldn't play because we had to get stuff done.  But alas the mortgage has to be paid so back to work I go.  So far I love everything about Kellogg's (other than the fact that I will be traveling 2 weeks straight including a Sunday departure), everyone has been so nice and welcoming, I got a sweet Ford Escape as my company car, 2 days working from home, summer hours from March-November (yes, there are only three months out of the year where you actually have to work until 5:00 on Fridays) and they even let me have a Blackberry (which ConAgra definitely did not unless I wanted to pay for it on my own!).  So if I have to work, Kellogg's is the place for me.

To commemorate my new job my bestie/former co-worker, Lori brought me over this yummy cookie bouquet today!
